I was wondering if any of you knew if the financial aid packages that you get every year will cover private housing (like apartments or rooms, etc). Obviously they cover University housing, but can you use elsewhere? Or would I just need to get another loan/ job?

Yes. Part of the off-campus living budget is for housing. It's not terribly much, mind you -- certainly not enough to finance a one-bedroom apartment with utilities. But it is enough to afford a room in a house. The budget for 2006-2007 allows about $665/month for rent and utilities if you live there August through May (they calculate food separately, allowing about $250/mo on the same time scale) versus the $1220 for housing/utilities/meal plan and about $100 for outside-dining-hall-food.

So how does that work, they transfer money into your bank account? boy, that means I don't have to live in the dorms next year!

Yes, they transfer the money to your bank account at the beginning of each semester and you can do whatever you want with that money.
