dougmeg, last year I didn't receive my F/A offer from Berkeley until after I was accepted, and even then it took a while to get in order because of all the verification forms I had to complete for income, residency, etc. On the good side though is that it was a pretty generous F/A package so I got plenty of money to cover tuition and housing and just work part time now for extras.

Does anyone have an EFC of $0? And how does that translate into Cal Grants and Pell Grants? I'm an "independent" for once going into my last and final semester at Berkeley (Fall 2008).
I've also been following the governor's budget and CA's budget crisis and said the governator planned on eliminating ALL NEW COMPETITIVE CAL GRANTS for next year which is a BIG PROBLEM since I applied for the UCDC program and the UC Sac program which are big financial drains. I need to pretty much do the programs because I dont have any internships under my belt; for the major I have, getting a job after graduation is the difference of having had an internship in the past or not.

Has anyone been getting the competitive Cal Grant (the one that gives you money for housing) on their fin-aid packages? If so, how much are you getting and thru which campus?

I don't think you need to worry so much about cal grants.

I am considered an independent student.
My original efc was $6,000 because I had worked while going to community college. Berkeley was the only school to offer me a full financial aid package regardless of my efc. They just offered that $6,000 in unsubsidized rather than subsidized loans.

Since I planned on quitting my job after transferring to Berkeley, I filed for an appeal and had my efc adjusted to 0. However, I received a letter from the cal grant office stating that the cal grant could not be adjusted since all available grants had already been given out.

My boyfriend also had an efc of 0 and did receive all of his cal grants. In the end, we ended up getting the same amount of money. My unsubsidized loans were adjusted to subsidized after my appeal, and my missing cal grant was replaced with a school grant.

If you have a 0 efc, I'm pretty sure that Berkeley will give you the max amount of subsidized loans and fill the rest in with grants regardless of whether you receive a cal grant or not.

I hope this isn't too confusing. God knows how confused I was when I was trying to figure all this stuff out. Let me know if you need anything clarified.

oops - I don't know why I assumed you were at Berkeley. What is the UCDC program?

i never got cal grant while attending ccc because i didnt apply for it in hs. I only got pell grant. is this gonna stay like this once i transferred? I tried applying for it but i failed because i was not considered a ccc student who is taking vocational classes.

luvtoolearn: thanks :)

I have an EFC of 0. So far, I've only been accepted by UCR and offered a financial aid package by them . . . They offered me a Cal Grant A, $4700 in Pell, $600 in work study and $5500 in loans. I'm disappointed that they didn't offer me any of their own grants. I don't know why they included a Cal Grant A; at my community college, I had been receiving a Cal Grant B competitive award.

how much is per quarter unit at UC?

Vocational for CAL grant is CAL GRANT C I believe, CAL GRANT A which is the one that is for the UCs or Privates works different and YOU CAN GET IT IN CC--- I DID .

I never applied in high school . My school send the gpa verification form automatically and before march 2nd, and that is how i got my cal grant. In Community college i recieved the portion of it that went for books and living expenses, which was maxed at 1550 for the year- the rest of it, was "saved" for me until i transfered to university.

When i transfered to UCLA- i had 2 years of cal grant earned and waiting for me that i did not have to qualify for again.

Cal grant A is a SET amount that covers the UC or CSU tuition or about 9k of private school tuition in california, with an additional portion for books and living expenses.

Purpleube- read your cal grant letters- usually cal grant B is given in CC and the cal grant A portion is "saved" until later for UC use. You can not get cal grant A at the community college level.

I had an EFC of 0 always- in my experience UCLA will give you the 5500 loan no matter what, and then meet your other need with grants.

Malishka, I already know that the A can't be used at CC level. The booklet that came with my award letter didn't say that the B turns into an A after transfer. If that's the case, then the booklet didn't make it clear.

"The Cal Grant B award during your first year, or while attending a California Community College, will pay for educational expenses, including living expenses and expenses for transportation, supplies and books, up to $1551. Beginning with the second year of Cal Grant B benefits or after transfer to a four year school, the award also helps pay for tuition and fees at public or private four-year colleges or other qualifying institutions."

Malishka,

In addition to your Cal Grant A, did you receive a Pell Grant? I'm in 20k debt right now, and still need 10k for the summer program, plus money for the Fall 08 term. If I dont get Cal Grant A (since the budget calls for elimination of all NEW cal grant As) I'm wondering around how much is a Pell Grant and if you got it?

I do go to Berkeley. UCDC is the University of California in DC (the Capitol). You do an internship and take classes there for units. It's open to any UC student from any campus so it's a great way to meet students from around California. But Berkeley has their own programs that parallel it. So Berkeley students can participate in the system-wide program known as UCDC or in their own program known as Cal-in-the-Capitol (minus the school aspect). Similarly there is the UC in Sacramento program but Cal also has their own program specific to them known as Cal-in-Sacramento (minus the units as well). Why Cal chooses to run their own programs is beyond me? perhaps, self-invented elitism? Either way, Berkeley students have the option of all 4 (UCDC, Cal in the Capitol, UCCS, Cal in Sacramento).

In that case, my experience has been that Berkeley will fill your full financial need regardless if you get the grants or not.

At least, that has been my experience as a 0 efc student without any cal grants.

Berkeley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am waiting on you!!!

Karabear --

Do they fill it with loans? Or some other type of grant?

Both. Last year the max loan per semester was $2750, so the rest was filled with grants and work study.

About how long after the acceptance notification does it take Cal to notify transfer students of their financial aid packages? A few days, week(s), more?

Thanks.

Hey guys, I've been living in Cali for almost 2 years attending a CCC. For whatever reason, my letter from the UCSC financial aid office said that i'll be paying out of state tuition when i transfer. it said that tuition would cost something like 26k, then it said my EFC was something like 19K, it differenced these and said they'd give me 7k in aid. I will file for reclassification as a resident where ever i go, so i'll really be paying resident tuition (around 7k).

My question is this: once i get reclassified as a resident, will i be getting less fafsa? I'd appreciate any help.

cja1130

My aid would be like this usually - Full Pell grant, Full Cal Grant A/B + access grant- ( i dont remember the exact letter with the access portion) that was tutition plus 1550 for books/supplies, then small university grant and/or FSEOG grant.

My total need would be about 22k , and my grants would be about 13k , then there was a workstudy but i never took that b/c i had a job.

Pell grant total when i was getting it was around 4300 but i think it is 4600 now. For summer programs the aid is VERY different, pretty much expect a huge loan and a small grant.

Purpleube- The after transfer portion of that note changes your cal grant- basically you want CAL GRANT B, not A. WHen you go to university, B will be split into two portions, B and B access , it gives you Tutition plus that 1551, the 1551 is the Access portion for books and stuff.

So... I filled out my FAFSA in early Feb., however, I put my residency preference for Berkeley as off--campus. Since the priority deadline has passed, if I were to change it to on-campus now (I've decided now that I'd rather room on-campus), would Berkeley just take the change into account or would my whole FAFSA be resubmitted and therefore Berkeley wouldn't give me any aid directly from the school and I'd have to get it from federal/other sources (because if it were resubmitted it would be after the deadline??

Duogmeg,

You will need to fill a budget appeal form. It should show up on the attached link as soon as they release it.

This form is also useful for anybody who is quitting their job after transfer. I filled one out and had my efc changed from 6,000 to 0 because I would no longer have an income after transfer.
