How willing is Duke University to aid international students? I heard that it was something like 20 - 25 students before, in which case I would eliminate Duke from my list of schools immediately. Has the situation changed or is financial aid for international (Canadian) citizens still very limited?

You’re correct: financial aid for international students is only about 20-25 individuals.

However, I’ve always thought this stat was misleading.

International students who apply to financial aid are put into a separate pool from other internationals and American students. Any given year, the number of international students who apply for financial aid aren’t spectacularly high.

Also, check if your country (the place where you hold residency–so not Canada if you live someplace else) currently has a sizable representation in Duke. If not, that’d help as Duke (like all universities) loves diversity.

I’d say if you were a decent applicant (who has good English and writing), to definitely go for it, especially if Duke is your first choice.

You might also want to cater your essay to increase your chances.

This is a good point. You never know. The university scholars program has several international students as it uses diversity as a measure of selection.
