Financial Aid for an International Student?

How willing is Duke University to aid international students? I heard that it was something like 20 - 25 students before, in which case I would eliminate Duke from my list of schools immediately. Has the situation changed or is financial aid for international (Canadian) citizens still very limited?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, AFAIK, it’s still very limited. Financial considerations are still used as a criteria for admissions for international students.

You’re correct: financial aid for international students is only about 20-25 individuals.

However, I’ve always thought this stat was misleading.

International students who apply to financial aid are put into a separate pool from other internationals and American students. Any given year, the number of international students who apply for financial aid aren’t spectacularly high.

Also, check if your country (the place where you hold residency–so not Canada if you live someplace else) currently has a sizable representation in Duke. If not, that’d help as Duke (like all universities) loves diversity.

I’d say if you were a decent applicant (who has good English and writing), to definitely go for it, especially if Duke is your first choice.

You might also want to cater your essay to increase your chances.

I’m studying in Hong Kong, does that change anything? Duke is definitely my first choice.

I think Duke already has a pretty substantial HK contingent so that’s possibly not very helpful.

If you are a strong candidate, apply anyways. You could get an A.B or uni scholarship. Otherwise, you’re probably going to be paying a lot.

This is a good point. You never know. The university scholars program has several international students as it uses diversity as a measure of selection.

For the class of 2011, 6/12 were born or grew up in a foreign country.

yes, and I think there is one person from hong kong who recieved the uni award this year.

apply. and good luck.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I’m going to go ahead and apply.

What about India? Does Duke have a sizeable class population from India?

^same question here.

^ I don’t know what the exact number is, but I’d venture to say that there’s already a sizeable Indian population at Duke.
