Anyone in this same boat or have advice?? My son is a sophomore in college. He has ADHD/Dyslexia, etc. We paid out of pocket last year and now his college fund is exhausted. He did get $6500 towards tuition this year but now having to get loans. The problem is his GPA is terrible. He will never be a stellar student. Some lenders want to see at least a 3.0 GPA. This might never happen for him. We are trying to get as good a loan as possible but it infuriates me to have to pay more interest due to his GPA when he has disabilities.
How much over the federal student loans do you have to borrow? If the school costs more than you can afford or there’s a danger he’ll be put on academic probation I’d find a less expensive school. Our daughter chose to start at a cc with a reduced course load so she had time to get used to it.
Is this college really affordable for you? It doesn’t sound like it is.
There are many college students with disabilities. They access the disabilities office, and get help. I think I’d start there.
But if financially this school is unaffordable, maybe it’s just no able to continue.
Don’t get infuriated- take a step back.
Is this the right college for your son, and are you all going to be in a healthy financial situation when he graduates with the loan obligations you are taking on? What does he want to do professionally, and will he be in a position to make enough money to live AND handle the loans?
Don’t saddle him with an unrealistic financial load. His ADD isn’t going to magically go away just because he has a college degree. He’ll need to find a profession where he can be successful-- a heavy loan burden is going to make that MUCH harder.
