Financial aid for low income, high achieving Asian (cali resident)

I'm searching for scholarships and financial aid at the UC's right now. I'm aware of the Pell Grant and alumni scholarships.

My stats are:

SAT: 2330
SAT subjects: 790 chem, 790 U.S. History, 790 math II
GPA: 3.91 UW, 2/570

I have decent EC's. I have also lived in California for my whole life. Could you guys give me advice on which major scholarships and grants I should apply for?

mcdonald’s scholarship. Lowe’s. fastweb.com

honestly, you could aim at private schools with your scores. they could potentially give you better scholarships than UCs

I think every applicant to Cal is automatically considered for the UC scholarships. With your academic standing, you have a good chance at the Regents’ scholarship, whose amount varies depending on “your” income. And for low-income recipients, this scholarship can become close to a full (financial) ride.

Even if you don’t get Regent’s and you are indeed low income (below 60k a year), the finaid will cover pretty much all you need with grants. You only need to pay around 3k in expenses not covered in grants and you can do that in workstudy or loans.

Thanks for the informative responses. My family makes under 20k a year, so that should help with the financial aid.

I did apply to a few privates, but they were all reaches. In retrospect, I wish I had applied more widely.

If your family truly makes under 20k a year, you should be completely covered. :)

um first off, you’re really amazing. i come from a pretty rich family and your scores blow mine out of the water. =]

luminouzz, from what i’ve heard from a friend, stanford covers full tuition if you make under 60k a year. and it’s not just stanford: i know someone who has a full ride to harvard. i think all the top-tier private schools also give plentiful financial aid. your scores are better than mine by a decent bit. i think you should try your luck with like the ivies, stanford, MIT, caltech, UChicago, duke, washu, JHU, etc etc. i really don’t think that UC schools will give that much aid considering the financial crisis california is in plus the fact that californians are already getting a discount.

best of luck

just for reference with regard to my scores: 2260 sat, 760 math 2, 750 bio, 4.0 gpa

You have to get outside scholarships or a Regent Scholarship to get a full ride at berkeley. If you don’t have either of those, the most in grants you can get is about 22k. The rest of the cost of attendance will be given to you in loans and workstudy, which sucks because they’re not really free money.

Thanks for the informative responses.

Bump. About grants/scholarships…

Undergraduates are considered automatically for most of these, right? (regents, grants, etc.) I just have to file my FAFSA on time?

Yeah. File it and in the acceptance letter, they usually give some kind of indication what you’ll receive from the school iirc.
