UC Berkeley is a California public school. (All of the UC’s are public schools). Berkeley is funded by California taxpayers and the State of California. Priority admission and funding goes to California state tax-paying residents.
The UC’s provide very little to no financial aid to OOS and international students. Low-income OOS/international students would not qualify for any California state-funded programs. How would you pay $55,000 per year?
Your score is solid and your background would help, but aunt bea is right. Most people who go to the UC’s outside of California receive little to no financial aid.
Is there any way that I can pay this $55k a year? I am very new to this financial aspect of college and I am the only one dealing with it with no help from anyone else.
I am an OOS Student at Cal with a low income. Berkeley offered me about $22k a year in scholarship money. You would still be paying around $38k a year to go here the first year and then if you apply for a co-op you can probably get the cost down to around $24k a year. Good luck and go bears!
Since you are International, you would no qualify for any federal loans. Your family would have to take out private loans from their home country to help you pay for the UC’s. Expect to pay the $55K/year since the above poster is not International but OOS (US citizen).
Since you’re an American citizen, which state will give you residency and in-state tuition? UCs won’t give you financial aid to cover the out-of-state tuition, so honestly you’re highly unlikely to be able to afford any UC.
@goldenbear2020 That is extremely unfortunate which is why I am also applying to schools in my state. My question is that is it possible to take out loans?
You can only take out $5,500 (freshman year), $6,500 (sophomore year), and $7,500 (junior/senior years) in loans, and the rest will require your parents to co-sign. But is attending a UC really worth 150-200k in loans to you and your parents?
if you are an out of state student, you can attend Cal for around 110k as a total cost if you do choose to live in the Co-Ops. I think it is well worth it as long as you major in something that offers a good return on investment.
