So if I stay in town and go to my financial safety school, ill probably be living off campus with a couple friends. When filling out the FAFSA for that school, I put off campus as the housing option. Is there a chance I can get grants for off campus housing (my EFC is around 2k)..and if yes..how do they determine how much I can get?

The schools COA (Cost of Attendance) includes an allowance for room and board. Do a search on the school web site for the COA (posssibly in the bursars section of the website).

Schools vary as to how off campus is included in the COA. At my daughter's school the COA for living on campus is the same as that for living off campus (unless it is with parents in which case it is less). At my sons school the COA for living off campus was actually higher than that for living on campus (because of the really grotty dorms maybe). Some schools off campus will reduce the COA.

COA - EFC = need on which financial aid is based so it all depends how your school treats it in their COA.
