I know it probably won't be a lot since this is nyu I'm talking about, but does anyone know how much aid they would give to a student whose family has an income below 40k? My family's EFC was O by the way.

you will get all the federal grants you are entitled to. If you are a NY resident, that will include the TAP and there is something called HEOP also. You will probably also be offered work study (you get a job on campus and the money paid goes directly to you)
NYU Office of Financial Aid
Introduction to HEOP
Apply for TAP

You - the student - will also be expected to take out subsidized stafford and possibly a Perkins loan (those are federal loans taken out in student's name, no credit or cosigner needed).

Then it will really depend on how much they want you as a student. If they really want you, you could get a big scholarship that covers the rest of your 'need' . NYU has stated that they are focusing their FA towards NEED over Merit.

You won't know until you apply and are accepted. BUT it is conceivable that NYU is affordable to you. But there is a good chance that you will still be taking out federal loans.

My son has received 2400 in Perkins loans each of his first 2 years, his stafford loan was 3500, 4500 respectively each year (he could have taken another 2k in unsubsidized stafford this year, but we opted not to do that). His work study award was nearly 4K this year. He remained on campus for most of winter break and was able to pick up alot of hours on the job (he works in the Palladium gym)
