How much financial aid do schools tend to give to transfer students?

Differs by school, but most schools give out lot less aid to transfers than freshman.

hell yeah, transfer aid sux!

why does it suck

It really does suck. I transfered with just under 60 hours and although I was offered a full ride to this college when I applied as a freshman, I did not receive any scholarship money at all this time around. My loans also have decreased so I'm having to pay a lot in cash that I wasn't having to before.

damn kel, that sux!! u should have went school shoppin!

I think there should be some clarification - most schools give out way less MERIT aid to transfers, as most of their merit scholarships are reserved for freshmen. However, if you apply to a school that pledges to meet "x%" of your need (like some schools say 100%) you will be getting that much in aid. Probably alot more loans, but your aid status isn't affected - just the amounts of different types of aid.

thats not totally true, some schools, more specifically, the liberal arts colleges claim that they dont have enough financial aid for transfer students--it is "limited". For example, vassar and bowdoin college.

so if you transfered to nyu.. youll get basically nothing?

exactly.

(10 chars)

I agree, big double fat 00.

Unless you get qualifed for some merit-scholarship, you'll get 0 financial aid from NYU besides the Pell Grant if you are transferring from out-of-state, which will give you no more than $8,050.. out of 40k of one year expense. Now if you are from an in-state college, then the story changes :)

This is the biggest why I didn't bother applying to Stern; the cost wast just ridiculously high compared to the benefits I'll earn.

oh sorry guys, didnt know about NYU... that sucks majorly

dhl3, if you are transfering from an in-state college.. a suny.. how much would you get then? whats the story then?

considering all the opinions as to financial aid, could a few of you who have actually transferred someplace or been accepted as a transfer tell us what your experiences have been with aid?

What kind of GPA and stats does it take to get a merit bases scholarship at a school like Berkeley?

Reviving this dead thread...

On other boards, I have seen indications that transfers can and do get good aid. I was wondering if more people could contribute with their experiences of receiving (or not receiving) financial packages, why some schools vs. others offered good ones (or none), etc.
