Financial Aid from Tulane

content…Did you receive your package today? I don’t want to ask you the details of your package, just are loans a big part of your package or is it a low amount? We are still waiting on my sons package. I received an email from Tulane explaining the no loan that Tulane offers. That is only for tuition, not other expenses. They told me the financial aid office wish it was called something else because it will always include loans. I have a copy of the email that explain exactly how it works if you would like for me to send it to you.

We were just talking about the “No Loan” package at my house the other day because it came up in another context, and we said the same thing about the name being misleading. So I looked it up and it actually seems pretty clear on this link [Tulane Admission: Scholarships & Aid](http://admission.tulane.edu/aid/index.php)
It says “No Loan Tuition” and it actually covers tuition, fees and transportation allowance. That’s about $41,000 out of $53,000. That doesn’t seem unreasonable or unfair to me.

But then I checked this link [Need-Based Scholarship](http://finaid.tulane.edu/idxneed_NOLA_scholarship.htm) and they call it “No Loan Assistance”, much less clear. Yes, the text spells it out, but let’s face it. Once people see the words “No Loan” they are going to stop listening and start celebrating, lol. They really should call it something like “Limited Income Assistance Program” (still seems shocking that $75,000/year is limited income in the context of a private school education!) which is ambiguous enough that people would have to then read the text carefully and see what it offers and what it doesn’t. It’s actually a pretty generous program, don’t you all think?

I think it’s misleading. I’m glad I read carefully before booking a flight. The FA/merit offer wasn’t bad, but ds has much better ones right now so, unfortunately Tulane is off the list. Which is a bummer because I’ve never been to NOLA and wanted to try all the cool places y’all are always talking about!!

Sorry to hear that Youdon’tsay, for both reasons (financial shortfall and no personal vacation in NOLA). But that’s a big part of the reason they need to apply different places, right? Where is he leaning towards as it stands right now?

You are right about the links with info about the NOLA program. That is why a couple of months ago I sent an email to financial aid asking them to clarify what exactly it did offer. I couldn’t believe getting accepted and having income below $75,000 would qualify someone for completely free education and of course it doesn’t. Considering the cost of Tulane’s tuition I think it would be great to receive enough aid to cover it. I definately agree it is a very generous program. Of course we all hope for more. Right now I just hope for my sons financial aid package to post!

Me too! We all want to find out what it is, lol.

FYI - even though I saw on Gibson that my daughter’s FA posted on the 24th (to answer one of the email questions) I see now that she also got an email the following day telling her to go look at it was now up for view.

I got an email yesterday telling me to look at FA…it’s up now.

fallenchemist.

HAHA
I am going to calm down for the weekend and get ready for xanax Monday! ; )
Just one more time. I really wish my sons financial aid package would post! LOL

I just realized I messed up on my fafsa and have to reprocess it. I had apparently misclicked and became an independent when I’m supposed to be a dependent. [This is correct on my CSS Profile, however] Still, when I processed it, the FAFSA worker said that it seems to show my correction as still being a yes. However, my EFC went from 0 to 1461. So…I might or might not have to reprocess the FAFSA. Would this delay of 3-6 days cause a problem in receiving financial aid from Tulane??

For others awaiting financial aid notification from Tulane: check Gibson for unsatisfied requirements! They recently added the Business /Farm Supplement under D’s requirements (along with W2s and tax returns which were already listed). We were told we should send tax returns if they are ready, but we technically have until May1. The Business/Farm notification had no indication of when it was needed, so I emailed to ask - though I felt a little guilty about adding to the financial aid workload right now. I’m glad I did, because the reply was “you need to fax the form before we can make an award.” Long story short: if you haven’t heard anything yet, check Gibson to make sure they haven’t listed an additional requirement!

I didn’t have any additional requirements listed but called financial aid on Friday about something else and was told that they did not have any of our tax returns or W2’s…which I did send about 6 weeks ago. I was able to email them to her so that saved a little time. I guess when you are dealing with that many documents it is easy to misplace a few of them. I asked if this would delay notification of aid and they said if we didn’t have it by Wednesday to give them a call.

Thanks for the heads up, defunctmom. That is good advice. In my kids case one of the requirements says “received review pending” dated more than a month ago. I think that may be holding things up for my kid.

Still nothing :frowning: I would have actually considered Tulane if they had given me a good package early, but now I’ve gotten accepted to my #1 choice, which is a state school so it’s guaranteed to be cheap. Silly Tulane, losing students with this madness.

dreamerr - obviously as has been stated earlier, Tulane intended to have all the awards up by March 19 and ran into problems with the new system. But if you got into your #1 choice anyway, how did they lose you? Still, it is certainly true that snafus like this don’t help at all.

That is great news that you are accepted to your #1 choice and it is also affordable.

Well, no news so far today but handling it much better now. Actually haven’t checked but twice today. Maybe tomorrow…or not.

Dean’s Honor Scholarship recipients please note that your award amount may have been adjusted to the new level - $38,300. Mine has changed.

Thanks! I just checked and mine changed also.

Thanks guys.

Fallen – I understand that they had some type of issues, but it just seems silly to me that people were accepted back in October or November and STILL don’t have financial packages (like me). And I was under the impression that they were supposed to START putting up awards on the 19th? Whatever the issue is, the seeming lack of organization might deter some people. I don’t mean to badmouth the school or offend anyone, they just don’t seem to have this process quite down pat, which is a little stressful for applicants.

Anyways, best of luck to everyone else!
