Financial Aid from Tulane

Understood dreamerr. However it isn’t unusual for schools to accept early and do financial packages later. Some do them close together, some don’t. And as far as the glitch, this is the first year for the Gibson system, as I said. It may have been poor testing on Tulane’s part, or it might have been a nearly unforeseeable programming issue. Having been through both, I know how easily it can happen. I am confident that next year will go much more smoothly.

So where you heading off to?

I understand Fallen. Maybe it was for the best.

Looks like I’ll be headed to Binghamton, unless I get some surprise acceptances from Cornell or Brown on April 1st (which I’m not counting on, lol :))

I’ve read some good things about Bing on here. Seems like a place that has really focused on improvement for some time. Good luck with Cornell and Brown (which is in my “back yard”), sounds like you are in great shape no matter.

Does the financial aid staff have the same spring break as students?! I have recently faxed some additional documents, and my family may just have to lock me up if we have to wait until after Easter to hear that they have recieved them at least!

I know that they were in the office yesterday. I spoke with someone and they also corrected information on my Gibson.

They are more like a company than a university in that respect. Employees work every day, get their 2-3 weeks vacation or whatever, but they work over breaks. Especially now! I think they might get the week between Christmas and New Years.

They are most certainly there and working hard, Business/Farm Supplement is now listed as a satisfied requirement with status completed and reviewed. The panic attack is darkest just before the status update!

Can anyone tell me if I must accept my merit award before my need-based aid is posted?
Thanks!

Someone said earlier you have to agree to the terms and conditions, but it doesn’t commit you to anything. That’s all I have seen on the topic so far.

I was accepted to Tulane a while back and I just now received my financial aid award, but I’m curious to know whether or not my scholarship would be for all 4 years or just the first year… the description of the award wasn’t very specific and it’s kind of important.

JROSE - I’m assuming it is a merit scholarship, in which case it is for all four years provided you maintain a certain GPA.

Fret - You do not have to accept the merit award prior to need-based being posted.

JROSE - can you tell us the name and/or the amount of the scholarship?

yeah, it’s for about 28,XXX. I am not sure of the exact number or name for that matter does that help at all?

OK, I think I see what you are saying now. This sounds like the grant portion of your FA package, because Tulane doesn’t have an “automatic” merit award that high. In other words, one for which they review all applicants for eligibility, regardless of financial need or lack thereof. If you had gotten a merit scholarship, it would have been included in your acceptance letter. If I am correct that this is a FA grant, then no it is not automatically renewed for 4 years. If your family’s EFC changes, then so will the FA package. If your family’s financial circumstances improve, you might get less. If they get “worse”, which could mean a loss of income or an increase in expenses such as another tuition for a sibling, then you could actually get more.

Since we cannot see your exact offer this is just my best guess. You can call Tulane’s Financial Aid office and ask for clarification.

Still nothing for us : (

and I really want to know…soon! but this is really helping with spring cleaning…I am staying busy, busy, busy…

D’s aid posted and it is very generous! Not completely painless - I’d like her to keep applying for outside scholarships so she can whittle down or eliminate 2,000 in unsub. stafford loans - but otherwise we are very happy!

Congrats…dfunckmom!

same with me, heltonmom. I called and they said hopefully by the end of the week, but you never know because they have been extending the date. Its beyond frustrating.

They told me to call if I didn’t have anything by midweek but I figure if they have it ready it will post so no need for me to bother them. I guess we can look at it this way…they will have to let us know by May 1st so anything before that will be great…of course I am saying that while medicated…LOL…will be bouncing off the walls and stressing when the meds wear off…LOL

@dfunckmom - That’s super! Congrats.

@heltonmom - I would call them at 3 PM Thursday their time if you haven’t seen it by then. Gives them almost 2 more days, surely they will have it by then! Sounds like they are making progress though.
