thanks njmom

heltonmom - If i could make a suggestion. Go to a movie. Call a friend and have lunch. Go to a local aquarium. Anything. Just step away from the computer. Slowly. You can do it. LOL.

I do hope they get most of them posted this week. Although if you are a conspiracy theory type, check and see if Tulane’s endowment investments have stock in the pharma company that makes Xanax. If so, maybe they are doing this on purpose and the whole “we have to enter these by hand” thing was just a clever ruse.

That’s funny, fallenchemist! Ironically, since my D seems to be the only one with her FA info on Gibson (which is very strange), I have checked a few times to make sure it hadn’t disappeared! lol We’re all neurotic and are helping to keep the xanax sales up!

My S was admitted to Tulane but without merit aid and we didn’t receive need based aid. He received some aid from other institutions. My question is whether Tulane is worth attending at full pay? Does anyone have any advice on how to seek additional aid?

Thanks

fallenchemist…I have used all my lifelines.Phoned a friend, had lunch, finished laundry and took a xanax and then took another xanax.LOL Thanks for the conspiracy theory comment. That contributed to the 2nd xanax. Nothing posted for my son as of 30 seconds ago. Gotta go check again.LOL

nj_mom…that is too funny. Please, if it disappears, do not tell me. LOL

BostonJack - I guess first off are you sure you didn’t get any financial aid from Tulane? As you can see if you read these posts, no one has seen their packages yet except nj_mom, at least of the posters on here. So you still may get some. It might be worth a call to the Tulane Financial Aid office to check your status.

But let’s assume just for discussion purposes that you don’t get any. Is Tulane worth full pay? The typical answer would be that it depends on how much the money means to you and your son. If $54,000 a year represents a relatively small portion of your assets, and if your child felt like Tulane was just a great, outstanding fit for them, then sure it could be worth it (although worth it compared to what is still an important question). However, if as is more likely since you qualified for aid elsewhere, $54,000 a year is highly significant to you, and/or you would incur a lot of debt trying to send your son to Tulane, then I would have to say no, Tulane is not worth it. Neither would be Harvard. I obviously think Tulane is a very special place, but this is an economic decision based on value, not an emotional one where one focuses on the intangibles. These intangibles are certainly real and very useful, but not at any price. In my mind, and it is only my opinion and very generalized, if either party will end up incurring more than about $25,000 in debt after 4 years, then it is probably better to choose a more affordable alternative.

But as I said, call the FA office and see if they are still entering your data. Usually the formulas at the different schools are fairly similar, and so I would think you would get something from Tulane.

Mine’s all up! And it’s really, really good. I got another Tulane grant/scholarship that covers 11k more, so basically all tuition is covered by scholarships, and then we’re left with about 7k to cover. (After loans, which I am taking all of them. A necessary evil to go to college.) So Tulane is doable, and I’m so happy.

Isn’t it incredible how much they gave and that you could go to a school of this caliber for that price? …and for us too, less than a state school in nj! Congrats. That’s awesome. Tulane was definitely way more generous than I was expecting!

I just bit the bullet and called the Financial Aid Office. The girl I talked to was really nice. I just asked when I’d be hearing, and said I heard they had some issues with the new system. She said they’re going as fast as they can, that they did have some issues with it, and that they’ve sent out over a thousand so far. She assured me they would be coming out before April 1, and then I told her my situation and she even checked it for me. If you have all your required documents in, it should be up soon.

Woo. Financial Aid was sh1t

All in all, $32K in grants, which leaves ~$22K to pay. Forget it.

Congrats to Oxymoron and Njmom! Ansar, maybe it was for the best. Northeastern didn’t come through with enough aid for me, so I just tell myself I didn’t belong there anyway!

I, of course, have no aid posted yet. So my wait will continue :(

No aid posted for my son today…The wait continues for us also.

In Gibson under requirements, holds, academic progress does anyone have their CSS Profile listed under satisfied requirements? I have emailed my sons financial aid counselor asking her if they have received it but have not received a response from her. The other colleges we sent it to received it so I don’t know why Tulane wouldn’t have it. I didn’t know if it should be listed under the satisfied requirements or not. I hope they are not going to tell me he has requirements not met for financial aid.

dreamerr-Same about Northeastern for me, which is why Tulane’s aid is so nice compared to Northeastern’s, which kind of sucked for me. I do love Boston though…

heltonmom-The CSS was under my satisfied requirements.

I need help understanding what to do next. Under son’s gibson portal account is listed the 25K presidential scholarship as full financial aid for 2010-2011. I thought the scholarship was merit aid? Either way, he should be eligible for other financial aid since income is under 30K. But the site says you have to accept the scholarship by clicking the accept terms button before you are given any other financial aid information. But son is not yet sure where he wants to attend college and needs to know the complete financial aid package before making any decision. Should he agree to accept the scholarship in order to find out financial aid if he is not sure he is attending?

Thanks Oxy…Glad that I can sign into college board and have proof of it being sent to Tulane on January 19. Maybe I will give them a call tomorrow since no one is answering my emails. I know they are very busy and don’t have time to answer all the emails they are receiving from parents and students.

almostforgot - I think you are accepting the terms and conditions of the web site, not the scholarship? Don’t know for sure since I cannot see it. It really doesn’t matter. Even if they are asking you to acknowledge that you understand the terms of the scholarship (things like you have to be a full time student, be in good standing and maintain a certain GPA), it doesn’t obligate your son to the school. You definitely need to accept the terms so that you can get the rest of the information you need, from what you are saying.

fallenchemist- thanks, I will see what happens

almostforgot-I accepted the terms of the scholarship, but I didn’t accept the scholarship, and I still got the rest of my aid posted today. In the email they sent to tell me my aid was ready, they said that accepting the aid didn’t bind me to Tulane or anything. So I don’t think accepting it would be a problem, but I also don’t think you have to yet. The rest of your FA will still get put up.

I need the no loan for middle income families if tulane is an option for me too but I have received my package and let me tell you - there are loans! I’m trying to contact financial aid, but they are not being too friendly!
