Financial Aid help

heres what my financial aid turned out looking for berkeley. and im having a little trouble reading it.

Total UC Berkeley Costs $53,878.00
My Gift Aid $21,544.00
My Net Cost $32,334.00
Parents Share $20,112.00
Students Loan And Work $10,700.00
Total Resources to Meet My Net Costs $30,812.00

Total Resources to Meet My UC Berkeley Costs $52,356.00

for gift aid, is that all free and doesnt need to be repaid?? or is it more like a loan?

and my awards turned out like this

GIFT AID
Conditional UG Scholrshp 15,394.00 conditional
Conditional Pell Grant 5,400.00 conditional
Conditional ACG Gran 750.00 conditional
Gift Aid Total $ 21,544.00

WORK-STUDY
Conditional Work-Stu 4,000.00 conditional

SUBSIDIZED LOAN
Conditional Subsidiz 3,500.00 conditional
Conditional Perkins Loan 1,200.00 conditional

UNSUBSIDIZED LOAN
Conditional Unsubsid 2,000.00 conditional
Conditional Parent Loan 20,112.00 conditional

what is difference between subsidized and unsubsidized??
and for the UG scholarship, does that need to be repaid?? ive heard that theres two kinds of scholarship. one kind you need to repay, and the other you dont. i know the grants dont need to be repaid, but does the UG scholarship of 15k need to be repaid?
i really appreciate any answers. because the 15k will make a big difference for me
thank you

hii

The gift aid is the stuff you don’t have to repay which is the $21K.

Work study is $4K, which means they are expecting you to hold a part time job during college to earn that $4K. :</p>

Subsidized loans means that the money you borrow has a subsidized interest rate meaning that the federal government will be paying part of the interest on that loan. It is better than the unsubsidized loans in which you will have to pay all of the interest that accumulates.

I hope this helps :)

I also received the Undergraduate Scholarship, and I read on the site that it is renewable granted that you keep at least a 3.5 gpa and have a financial need. Do you know if the amount of aid for the Undergrad Scholarship will change over the course of 4 years, I’m guessing it will according to how your financial need changes. And what’s weird is that my twin and I both got the Undergrad scholarship, but for different amounts, and we come from the same family and I actually have slightly better academics than him but he got the larger amount. Maybe it has something to do with which scholarships you marked on the UC application?

are you OOS?

what’s OOS?

Out of State

so with the work study, do you have to find your own job, or do they give you a job on campus?

also, this example was 21k, would she receive the 21k every year for the four years as long as nothing changes in her situation?

Basically, Gift Aid $21,544.00 is the free money that you don’t have pay them back. However, your parents have to pay the remaining money unless you want to get some loans or get a job. I did not know it costs so much for UCB. Is that for graduate study? We received information from UCD and UCSD, the total cost is only about $28,000 or $29,000 a year.

it is so high because we are out of state.

it says we need to maintain a 3.5 gpa. is this out of 4 or 5? and for an engineering student, how difficult would this be to maintain?

yes, i am out of state. so the costs have been devastating. im also a non-citizen. im currently a legal resident with green card. i live on guam right now. thanks for all the help. i think im going to take my chances at berkeley since none of the other colleges have given me much money. since im not citizen, its so hard to find good scholarships >_< but berkeley was kind enough to see that right now me and my family really needs it. next year both me and my older brother (currently at UW) will be in college
any idea why UW didnt give me anything??? i thought we would at least get like a multi-child discount or something, lol. thats how it was at my high school. i guess i cant expect that from colleges?
