Hey, i would love to study in california , my cousins live there.Im an international student .I would love to know what universities are the ones that give financial aid, i searched some like cal states where no aid is given, what universities do you guys recomend me besides top tier ones?

ACT:35
GPA:3,4(i know its low haha thats whhy im looking for mid tier schools and get some fin aid.. Act saved my ass :P)

THANKSS!!!!!!!!!!

Probably not gonna happen. All the Cali state schools like the UCs are broke and barely give any FA to their own students or out of state students, so definitely not to internationals. The only ones that do are the top schools, like Stanford, but that’s a high reach given your GPA and international status. If wanna study in California your best bet is to apply for mid to lower tier schools and pay full price (or take out some private loans). Your ACT score alone might get you scholarships at lower tier schools, but even those merit-based scholarships are often reserved to only US citizens and permanent residents and have a GPA cutoff. For example, the University of the Pacific has a $10k scholarship for international applicants (http://www.pacific.edu/Academics/Services-and-Resources/International-Programs-and-Services/Scholarships.html), but they’ll only consider you if you have 3.5+ GPA.

None of the Calif publics will give an int’l aid.

Calif is a HUGE long state, so where do your relatives live? You won’t see them much if they’re in Southern Calif and you’re in Nothern Calif…or vice versa.

Stanford does give int’ls aid, but it is “need aware” and incredibly hard to get accepted, especially if you’re from a country that has a lot of applicants.

I just saw your GPA. I don’t think there are any mid-tiers that give FA to int’ls in Calif. The reason being, that if they did, they’d start getting a gazillion apps from high stats int’ls, and then they wouldn’t be mid-tier anymore.

If your GPA were higher, then maybe some schools might give you some merit money, but your GPA is too low. Even with merit, your family would still have to pay a good deal.

Keep in mind that aid is based on your family’s income/assets. How much can your family pay?

CA isn’t giving out a lot of FA to their own residents and citizens, so I don’t think they will give it to you. You will just have to get loans like everyone else in CA.

Yeah i know, Public schools maybe wont give me any type of aid , but , what about private ones? Pomona college for example, are there any private schools whit generous financial aid ? thanks guys :)

There are some private schools that are generous with financial aid for internationals. Pomona meets full need but is need-aware. Your test scores are great but your GPA is a little low so Pomona would probably be a reach for you.

[Applying for Aid for International Students - Pomona College](http://pomona.edu/administration/financial-aid/international-students/international-student-overview.aspx)

The tricky thing about getting merit aid at California private schools is that they start out with a cost of attendance around $52,000-$55,000. That’s about the same as the cost of a public school for out of state students. Even with a generous amount of aid you’re still looking at a very expensive education.

Pomona is by no means mid-tier, by the way.

Pomona is not “mid tier”…you might not even be admited.

It’s highly doubtful that it would give you merit since they have lots of kids with ACT 34s (or SAT equivalent) with much higher GPAs.

For you to get a sizeable scholarship from the schools that give them to int’ls, you’d have to find ones where your stats are VERY high for the school.

Even my kids’ undergrad that gives hundreds of full tuition scholarships away each year, (even to int’ls) would not give one to you because your GPA isn’t at least a 3.5.

How much will your family pay? I don’t think any school would give you a free ride, so your family would have to pay at least for room, board, books, fees, personal expenses, insurance, and travel…these costs could be up to $20k per year.

Pomona has a strong preference for students with high GPAs, making it a very high reach for the OP. I thought Pitzer (part of the Claremont colleges) might be a possibility, but they offer no aid for internationals.

University of Redlands has some merit aid for internationals. No idea how competitive it is. OP, the posters in [International Students - College Confidential](International Students - College Confidential Forums) would know.

Redlands is very good with merit aid and the OP’s stats would make him a good candidate for their Achievement and Presidential scholarships. But with a COA around $52,000 even the most generous merit awards will only bring the cost down to around $40,000. No need-based aid is available for international students at Redlands.
