Financial Aid Office

If my dealings with AU’s FA office these past few weeks is a indication of how the university is run, I am worried. Almost five weeks ago I faxed a letter of appeal along with supporting documents in he hope that our situation would be re-evaluated in light of substantial financial changes since filing the FAFSA and Profile. I was told then that we would receive a decision in 7 to 10 days. Since then my DD has called several times only to be told that she will hear “tomorrow”. I called this morning and was first told that a email was sent last week, then I was put on hold only to find out that the email was not sent and we would get a call today. Well, its 4pm and no call. They are very polite on the phone but clearly no one knows what they are talking about. I realize this is their “busy time” but come on.

I wish I were surprised. I like an awful lot of things about AU, but in the recent past, at least, the Admissions Office’s record of notifying applicants has been embarrassing. When my daughter was on her gap year, they weren’t too great about keeping her in the loop, either. If you’re having troubles with Financial Aid, I’m sorry, but I’m not surprised.

But if you can get this ironed out, and if your daughter does eventually attend AU, I think you’ll find a lot to like.

Meanwhile, sorry for your frustration. Hope this all works out.

pushydad - was DD accepted? S13 applied regular decision so we haven’t heard if he is accepted yet & DH lost his job. I was waiting to tackle the whole FA thing once we find out if he gets in.

I hope all goes well for you. Please keep us updated.

Kat2013. it sounds like our situations have a lot in common. My DD was accepted ED, then my wife lost her job and I am on disability. At the end of the day yesterday, I called yet again and was finally put on the phone with a real FA counselor. He told me about the one additional document that they needed to review our appeal but also that the appeals committee would not consider our case until ten weeks after my wife’s last day of employment. That was a hard and fast rule that they follow. That is five weeks from now which makes the whole thing much more stressful. Their policies aside, we should not need to hound them to get information. At times I felt like was I dealing with the DMV, multiple people each with incomplete or incorrect information doling it out piecemeal. Not what I would expect from a institution like AU. FA is only one area where they need to get their communications act together. DD is very frustrated trying to navigate the AU website and get all the info that she needs to get ready for freshman year. It seems very disjointed. I know it will all fall into place but it shouldn’t be this difficult at this stage.
