I was just curious if institutional aid is commonly awarded to out of state students at Michigan? I ran the College board NPC and it brought my estimated net price down to 13,000$ a year. Should I really expect to get that much aid as an out of state applicant? I’ve heard many times that out of state students tend to not receive any financial aid for state schools. PLEASE HELP!!!
Yes, Michigan does award FA to OOS students, but you must apply EA (for scholarships) and it is not guaranteed like with in-state students. That being said, they usually give large amounts to OOS students and it is extremely common.
@as1799 I personally know a student who was OOS and high need. She was admitted to LSA and received virtually a full ride. It was all need based aid. As I recall they did expect her to borrow around $5000 her freshman year but they didn’t gap her, she had no parental contribution, and they didn’t expect her to take private loans or her parents to borrow. She was admitted in December and received her FA award in the spring. Michigan was actually much more generous to her than several private universities (notably USC, American and NYU). If you want to send me a message, I can put you in touch with her. She’s now in the Residential College.
@TooOld4School that’s reassuring. I applied ea. @exlibris97 I’m not “high need”, but in the group that makes enough money but not enough to pay for college (<100k)
@exlibris97 so does that mean if I didn’t apply early action that I won’t be able to receive any aid?? And could you also put me in touch with her?? I’d love to get a sense of the process
Scholarships (school sponsored) require EA, FA does not. There is no reason not to apply EA, however, since it is not binding. Admission rates are much higher in EA as well. The NPC figure also usually includes loans and often work-study, so I would look at it carefully.
As a OOS my daughter and I keep running the NPC and it keeps returning something very similar to the EFC before any loans/work is mentioned/added. I still do not believe the actual offer (if accepted) will be that generous.
This discussion gives me a bit of hope, it might indeed come true.
Michigan FA is equivalent to most of the full need private schools (in many cases better). There are some instances where the NPC is not accurate: Examples include: 1) when you own a business with significant assets it can get start to deviate 2) when you have large capital gains transactions that are reflected in income but have not changed your assets 3) when you have significant unrealized tax liabilities. For most people it is pretty accurate.
My son and I went to the CoE sponsored Tech Day in October. I asked specifically if the net price calculator would give us a realistic estimate (it was right on for my daughter who at another school). They told me YES .
@binky17 UM financial aid is mostly need based. Their stats were scores in the low 700s. GPAs around 3.8 UW. That said, the school I work with says UM financial aid is now considered very good in general, even for OOS students.
