Hello,

Well I was recently accepted to NYU, Class of 2016! I just wanted to know if it will be worth it attending. I got 28,000 in free money which includes a Steinhardt Scholarship, Eckhouse Scholarship, Pell Grant, and a Provost Grant. By the beginning of school, which is at the end of August, I hope to have saved up 7,500 (I work and my parents are contributing) which would bring me to a total of 35,500. My parents said they could help me with 5 grand throughout the year. Now I know many say NYU is almost 60,000 but I did my research and I found out I could dorm in a low cost room which is 7,190 for the year and the tuition is about 42,000. Therefore my total will be at about 52,000. Now my question is, is it worth it to go into debt 12,000 per year, for a total of 48-60 thousand over 4 years(hopefully 3 so its cheaper)? Oh and is 28,000 a lot considering NYU's poor financial aid packages?

One vote: No more than around $25K total over four years (federal student loans) is reasonable. Now if your parents will take on the other $25K in loans…

$28K in grants sounds pretty good for NYU!

28,000 in free money is very good from NYU. you did your research which is very good. The LCT is a very good option to cut cost, however, as you move up the ladder to soph, junior, etc the LCT becomes more epensive. The debt you should take on for 4 years should be no more than the cost of 1 year.( i read that somewhere). Can your parents contribute to your tuition, possibly take the parent plus loan? Can they contribute that 5000 to your tuition and you take a work study job for your personal expenses? Also, you should be looking for outside schoarships. Anything to lower your costs.

Well they just said 5,000, not specifically where they would put it towards but I do want it towards tuition. Also, I do plan on getting a job but I’m not sure work study would give me enough hours to work based on some of the things I’ve read about work study on the college campus. Therefore, I would much rather get a full time job (hopefully graveyard shift if I can handle it). I know its crazy but so far NYU is the school that’s offered me the most money. Oh and my parents EFC is 0, i’m not sure they’ll be able to contribute anymore than the 5 grand.

It will be very difficult to take on a fulltime job and school the first year. It is a very big adjustment.

Yea, I was thinking about that. If I get a full time job I won’t enjoy my freshman year so i’m probably going to stick to a part time on campus or out in the city. Is it worth it though? I’ve been accepted to all the cal states I applied to here in California and UCR. I was also accepted to Drexel and Fordham, but I haven’t gotten my finaid packet for those. Any thoughts?

Where did you get your id to login to find out what your financial aid package was?

It was on my acceptance letter and e-mail. Did you get accepted?
