Financial Aid Package

FYI you can check you financial aid package at your portal, but you have to go forward to the 2005-2006 year

I got a little bit more than 28,000 (22000 which aren’t loans) in their package, that covers all the tuition but that still leaves about 10,000 for the room and board. Now how am I supposed to make that up other than non university scholarships? Does American U have merit scholarships that are seperate and I just didn’t get them or do I have to apply?

I only got 4625 from AU itself. I guess they never got my FAFSA by my EFC was only around $9900. I hope they can fix it.

I got $25,500 from Dean Scholarship/grants/loans/work-study, but like you Sohrab, that still leaves well over $10,000 (actually closer to $15,000 for me). Meanwhile, my EFC was half of that at $7600, making it impossible to afford AU. I guess I'll have to give them a call and explain the situation.

AU's financial aid application documents received thing doesn't say that they ever got my FAFSA, but I submitted it to them. What's the matter? Why didn't they get it? And how come all I got was work study and a Federal Direct Subsidized Loan.

UGH. This can't be happening.

Grkam my EFC is 912 how do you think I feel? But I will probably win some private scholarships and take out some PLUS loans.

Xanderman, do the FAFSA online and sumbit it that way.

I did the FAFSA online. And submitted it like a month ago. I just think it's ridiculous how I didn't get anything besides $4625 for next year when my family's income is only like $37,000 a year.

Wow, I thought my offer was unfair --- you guys seem to be in much deeper waters than I am. Hopefully the financial aid is negotiable.

xanderman did you feel out the American University supplement for financial aid? (it is different than FAFSA) if you did I would go and make a phone call or talk to someone who has some power at AU and try to explain your situation.

I do know that a lot of that federal money is kind of "first come first served" so it's best, any year, to do the FAFSA the first or second week of January, even though the deadline isn't until March. When you wait later, you generally just get offered some loans or work study or something like that.... Call them and see what your options are, but remember that your EFC may be lower for the second year if you spend the money in your name, etc. etc.

the financial aid was definately less than I was expecting it to be. not including loans, I got about 20,000 from the school. (25,000 including loans) That still leaves about another 15,000 for us to pay for. My mom, who is my custodial parent and whose info was on the fafsa, barely made that much money last year. It would be interesting to see how they came up with their numbers...

They told me that was the maximum offer. That is too bad I thought this school had good financial aid now I think I won't go there because of the cost. It is really a shame I actually wanted to go there.
