I will start college in about three weeks and I still haven't received any grants or other types of finicial aid from my college. The only thing I received were the scholarships that I already won. I was wondering if this is typical of a public university.

I filed my FASFA since January 1st and I do not understand why I would not receive aid currently. Any help?

did you recieve any information at all from the financial aid department? It is typical of FA at public universities to be very minimal -- their FA goes mainly to the students with the lowest EFC's and pell grant qualifiers. If your EFC wasn't that low -- then even if the cost of attendence is more than the EFC, you don't get much.

you say you had already won scholarships -- that also cut into any financial aid you would have been awarded-- most schools don't allow scholarships to be used towards the EFC.

You should have received a FA statement showing what you were awarded -- even if it was nothing. if you did not receive a statement I would call them today!

My EFC was 0000 and I filed my Fasfa since the first of January. Also, I checked the finicial aid website of the school and they said they are running behind. However, how can they run that behind, that means many will not receive the money they need to go to school.

i spent all of march-june calling colleges about financial aid....in the end it paid off ....but in my opinion the process takes too much time at some universities....if financial aid is very important in your decision making, your screwed....after calling all the time, they finally sent me my financial aid information....good luck, i recommend calling

Well I will definately attend that college because of the scholarships I was offered. Also, every time I contact the office they say they are running behind, however, school is about to start soon.

Bossgirl,
What college is it? I would be very concerned about any college that is providing financial aid information this late. That would put most needy students -- the majority of whom won't have outside scholarships -- in a real bind. Most colleges with good financial aid provide incoming freshmen with financial aid information before the students need to notify the college about their admission decisions. The colleges do this because the colleges know that financial aid will factor into students' deciding to accept admissions offers.

In addition, if the outside scholarships that you got are only for one year, you may find yourself stuck next year if you don't get the financial aid from the college that you need. There aren't those many scholarships that one can apply for as a college freshman or soph. The majority of scholarships are for students who'll be college freshmen or seniors.

I also suggest that you name the school because others here may have information about their financial aid. You need to get as much info as possible because if the school is known for cutting financial aid or for giving loan-heavy packages, you may want to transfer.

Finally I got my financial aid. It is too late, but I finally got it. I guess I will just try to pay some people back and save the rest because I might go through the same stuff next semester.

Thanks for updating us. Wow! That college sounds very disorganized. You are right to save the $ in case the same thing happens next semester, which based on your experience sounds very likely.

Despite the fin aid problems, I hope you're having a good college experience.
