Financial Aid packages

I got my package in the mail today, and i'm not sure if i'm satisfied with it. I got around $42000 combined with grants, scholerships, pell grant, FSOG, and work-study. While there is around $4500 in loans (direct subsidized and perkins), altogether, a total of around 46500. Rochester is around 50,500 (according to the paper) which means my parents will have to pay around 4000 per year, and with $18000 of loans with interests to pay back after graduation. Is that good?

I'd be happy with it. The average debt of most college students after graduation for the schools I looked at is around 20,000. BTW what is FSOG and can someone explain to me how work-study works?

its here, University of Rochester : Need-Based Aid

what opinion does everyone else hold?

I think your package sounds pretty darn good.

I got a very, very similar package as you. (46,531 total aid)
My loans are 5,500 a year, though.

$4,000 a year for a private school (esp. U of R) is very, very good.

I don't know if this helps, but this package just made me even more sure that I will be at U of R this August.

=) Best of luck to you, and I hope you make the right decision when you make it.

Anything with under 20k in loans is pretty good and if your parents can handle 4k, then that's a pretty solid package. I would be happy with it, But, if you aren't you could try appealing it.
I am excited that they are sending out finanical aid stuff!

thanks everyone for the positive feedback, i guess ill have to wait until the FA packages of all the other colleges come out, but one of the ones that I have in my mind is a pretty good college where I wont have to pay any loans at all..so im looking forward to their package, but yeah, i guess 18000 loans for UofR isnt that bad....it just looks a little bit daunting to someone with very little family income. Only time will tell what happens:)...

ps-ceraopteris, its nice to see that someone else also got the same kind of deal! and im hoping the same over here, hopefully me, along with you, will make the right decisions...best of luck to you too buddy

i got my FA package today

12,000 Rhees scholarship
3,000 in federal loan

which i thought was weird, since our fafsa efc was 19,600

^^^
Lugburz- I got that exact same financial aid package and my EFC estimated by the FAFSA was also lower than the $35,000 they expect my family to pay. I called the Rochester FA people today and they said that the CSS profile can change the EFC. Well I don't think I'm going to Rochester, at least not with my current FA package. You should call your FA officer, maybe you'll get better results than I did.

We are still waiting on our package. Honestly if my son got the packages you guys got, I would be thrilled. My FAFSA was 16000 but I have an ex hubby who is not helping to pay and his numbers will severely hose my son's chances of need based aid.

I got my financial aid package a little while ago. I got a Dean's Scholarship for $4,000 per year, and a grant for about $13,000 per year. With loans and everything it came to $25,000 a year, so about half. My EFC was low, around $15K so I was a little surprised, but at least I got a good about.

How long after getting accepted did you get financial aid because i was accepted today but no info about scholarships or aid was included in my letter at all. Does this mean i didnt get any?

no collegekyle, Rochester sends its FA packages after they send the FA letters. As opposed to schools like Gettysburg which are kind and send both at the same time.

I got my financial aid package about a week after my acceptance letter.

Scholarship information came with the financial aid package and not with my acceptance.

So, no, it doesn't mean you did not get any.

Whew. DS got his acceptance today. So we can expect financial aid in about a week?

Yay I got accepted today. Is it a problem if I sent in copies of W2s and Income Tax Returns really late? like around mid march. They will still meet 100% of demonstrated need right?

i was very disappointed..i got eight thousand scholarship and one unsubsidized loan for $4,500..so my cost would be like 42 and then have to pay back the loan..

Sounds like my son got the same offer - although he didnt say anything about unsub loan (which EVERYONE should be offered, regardless of income). A little underwhelming.

So - I will be on the phone tomorrow. Looks like we got NO FA offer, not even the unsub loan. No way that should be. Our EFC was 15k.

Disapointing, only recived $5000 in merit money (dont qualify for fin. aid.) Looks like I will probably be headed for Case or RIT.
