^^^

Does it give a breakdown for that COA? I know the cost of suites housing went up, and the COA does include the suites housing costs.

I wonder how much OOS tuition went up. That COA sounds like it has similar personal expenses, travel, books, etc costs as last year.

Bama seems to include over $4500 in books, travel, and personal expenses. That seems a high estimate to me. But, then, my kids have to cover their own pocket money. LOL

Here’s the current year’s breakdown

Here’s the current school year’s COA

In-State … Description … Out-of-State
$7700… Tuition and Fees… $19900
$10400 … Room and Board … $10400
$1100 … Books … $1100
$1165 … Transportation … $1615
$1900 … Miscellaneous … $1800
$22265… TOTAL … $34815

i think the OOS tuition last year was 19200

Right…but the figure in my post (for this last year) includes an guess of $700 a year in fees.

Here’s an example of my son’s fees for this semester

ARTS & SCIENCE COLLEGE FEE $120.00

A & S FACIL./TECH COLLEGE FEE $84.00

HONORS COLLEGE FACIL./TECH FEE $21.00

I’ve noticed that the classes that have labs seem to have the most fees. I guess that makes sense. My other son’s fees are a bit higher cuz he has more labs this semester.

M2ck, to answer your question, no there wasn’t a line item breakdown explaining the estimated COA of $36,257.00 for 2010-11. In fact, the nominal (not actual) dollar value of the Presidential Scholarship is identical to the 2009-10 OOS tuition ($19,200) on my son’s Mybama account. Based on what I learned from Carolyn Rogers, this figure is just a place holder for now, pending a determination of the tuition for 2010-11. I haven’t seen the 2010-11 tuition published anywhere yet.

Ahhh…hmmm…wonder when the tuition gets set?

I remember that tuition must be set by uly 1st, though it might take a couple of days to be posted on the website. If you’re familiar with public schools, the new year starts on July 1 for accounting purposes. For UA, I believe it’s October 1st, but tuition retains the July date, which is the same as other state schools. I’d expect an announcement of tuition rates anytime between June 1 and July 15.

About the NM awards: Remember, your son or daughter will receive a note each February to renew the $1,000 stipend that he or she was awarded with the NM package. Make sure that he or she goes online with the NM Scholarship Corporation and logs in to keep that stipend.

One thing that I find interesting about the fees charged per semester is this: One of my son’s majors is economics, but he is with the College of Arts & Sciences, not the business school. Still, he pays a fee to the business school to take that class – next fall, it will be two classes.

BassettMomma: Considering that your son is just 20 points from that Presidential scholarship, do try to contact someone in the honors college and scholarship office and see if something can be done. It never hurts to explain that UA is his top choice, and that he really wants to attend, but you would need additional monies to cover the cost. A good friend of mine remembers her senior year of college when she came up short on her tuition payment. She thought she would have to drop out just 15 credits short of her degree. Somehow, the director of financial services at her school found a grant and some scholarship money. She not only graduated but is currently studying for her masters. So make that contact.

I’ll second momreads’s comment about course fees. These fees are assessed by the college that is operating the class. That means that everyone in the class pays the same fees regardless of what college they are officially enrolled in. Economics is odd because it is historically an A&S major, but the faculty and facilities are that of CBA (economics is also a CBA major depending on which requirements you want to complete).

thanks for the advise about contacting the school. I will. By the way I am from Fullerton, CA
