Ok so here is the situation. My dad got a job in Michigan in late August-early September and I am applying for in-state tuition for the University of Michigan. However, my dad doesn’t have a Michigan driver license, but he has all the other requirements for me to apply for in-state. Will him not having Michigan’s driver license cost me a chance to get in state tuition at UMICH? Any replies from people who have experienced this type of situation or are accustomed to in state policies for UMICH would be of great appreciation.
You need to discuss this directly with the department at UMich that determines in state residency. From what I was told some years ago, you need to live in Michigan for a year before getting that status, but you need to check this out yourself.
It’s illegal to reside in Michigan and not obtain a Michigan driver’s license. It will take him no time at all to accomplish this. I would suggest not filing your application for residency status until that is accomplished as it is one of the required proof points. What’s holding him back from getting that accomplished? Anyway if you haven’t read this below is the link:

Presuming you’ve read everything at the link above, below are the points that I think specifically apply to you, but there is much on that page so as you fill out your request I would advise addressing each and every point that is applicable. Are you attending a Michigan high school currently for your senior year?.

Both of your parents or parents-in-law (or in the case of divorce, one parent or parent-in-law) are permanent legal residents of Michigan as demonstrated by permanent employment in the State, establishment of a primary household in Michigan, and severance of out-of-state ties. You must also show that you have severed all out-of-state ties that suggest another state is your legal residence.

In addition to the driver’s license
a signed letter from the employer, written on letterhead (including phone number), stating the position, status, and dates of employment; and
a copy of the most recent pay stub showing that Michigan taxes are being withheld.
There might be more that would support your claim, but you can read the entire link and pick out which items are important.
Michigan is very diligent about establishing residency. and especially so if the high school transcript is not from Michigan which is why I asked if you were finishing your senior year here. My friends who had children who graduated from prep school out of state had to “prove” their residency in Michigan even though their families had been lifelong residents for generations.
@momofthreeboys wow thanks this was actually very helpful. I moved to Indiana when I was eight years old from Michigan and lived here ever since, but my dad recently moved back to Michigan because of the job offer. I printed out all the in-state residency application paper work and hope to get it approved by UMICH.
^are YOU living in Michigan now?
If not, you may want to be…just checkin.
@kmcmom13 No but my dad has property in Michigan, works in michigan, and pays michigan taxes
I think you’re going to have a great deal of difficulty meeting te criteria if your family hasn’t established permanent RESIDENCY in Michigan, with a swpeverance of ties to another state. Is it your family’s ultimate plan to sell your home OOS and relocate to Michigan for living purposes?
The University of Michigan decided that I am not in-state, however, they are waiting for financial documents to make their decision. I don’t know, but I think its worth a shot.
I doubt you’ll get it. Umich is stingy as hell especially with this topic. I lived and studied in michigan for 16+ years and got flagged by admissions as OOS because I spent a summer studying internationally while in hs.
I submitted all my stuff and meet the qualifications but Ill take your word for it
The in state tuition policy was last updated in Jan 2014. Since you did not go to high school in Michigan and your father just moved back a few months ago. You are probably not considered in state for this year.
Yea most likely but again I like to see what they say
Yea I heard back from Michigan state and they denied my in state application, expecting to hear the same from the university of Michigan soon LOL
They denied it because you are not an in-state resident…
