Financial Aid Question

If Penn is need-blind, why do they ask that early decision applicants fill out the penn financial aid supplement? I'm just a little confused…..

I’m assuming it’s because if you’re accepted ED you HAVE to go unless your family absolutely cannot afford it, so you’ll probably want to have a good idea how much it’s going to cost right away if you are accepted.

@rigal97‌ so that when they give you a decision, they can also give you your financial aid package so you can then be sure penn is affordable for you.

Oh ok thanks guys @Wharton2020‌ @BigBadBull‌ . So that won’t affect my admission decision??

@rigal97‌ it won’t affect your decision, but if money is an issue and the aid they provide isn’t enough you have to let them know well in advance for legal purposes

@Wharton2020‌

If money is the issue, do we right now have to inform them how much financial aid we need even we have submitted the financial aid supplement. What do you mean by well in advance for legal purpose?

If someone is with low income but high asset value in their primary home but they don’t want to size down by selling the house to a smaller one to squeeze enough money to finance their kid to college, can they reject ED for this reason?

@rigal97‌ Nope! The financial aid application is sent to the Student Financial Services (SFS) office so that they can provide you with a financial aid offer right away if you’re admitted to Penn. Note that Penn is only need blind for American, Canadian, and Mexican citizens and permanent residents.

@recycle98‌ No, if you’re admitted, SFS will create a financial aid package for you based on the information you provided in the supplement. I’m not too sure about the “legal purposes” part but I believe it’s because ED is binding, if you anticipate requiring financial aid, you must apply for financial aid. Otherwise, if you’re admitted but cannot attend because it’s too costly, you’d be breaking the ED agreement since you didn’t indicate beforehand that you need financial aid. I’m not sure about the assets question, sorry. :(

Hope this helps! :)
