Financial Aid Question

Hello,
I am the first person to go to college from an immigrant family. That being said my parents and my family members do not hold green cards. I was born in the US so i am a US citizen. My question is about private loans, to cover what is left over after the financial aid given by the school. I have already talked to one of the financial aid people at my school at told me that a cosigner is required to take out a loan, well as stated above no one in my family has a green card, therefore i don't have anyone to sign for me and I am 18 so I don't have much of a credit history. If you guys could point me in the right direction on what to do to cover my expenses i would really appreciate it. I am very excited to go to college and I would be very disappointed if i was not able to attend school because i can't find a co-signer. Plz Help!

Any relatives or very close family friends? And what kinds of loans are you talking about? From non-profit organizations, from the college, or from banks?

No, I don't have any relatives anywhere in the country, at least that would help me out. As for what type of loan I would think a bank loan, but at this point i would take almost any loan, I can't stay out of college.

You need to talk to the financial aid people at the specific college for ideas. They may have some sources that have worked with their students.

Hey Juan,
I am also the first to go to college from an immigrant family. Is there any way that someone from your college can cosign with you? You mentioned that you've already talked to the financial aid office, did you let them know that there is no one to cosign with you? Is there a teacher, a friend of the family, an employer who will be willing to cosign?
Is the amount you need to cover really big? is there any way that you could cover it with summer earnings (probably not since you are looking for loans...but just asking)?
Definitely call the fin aid office and ask for ideas.

SS

Asking someone to co-sign is unfortunately a very big deal since that person is going to be stuck with that loan on their credit record and they will have to know that they will have to pay if anything happens to you.

yeah, i know, it's pretty tough i haven't been able to find anyone yet. I am still looking for someone to co-sign, and yes i told the school i have no one to cosign for me and they said that it is a REQUIREMENT. So... as of now im still looking.
