I REALLY REALLY want to go to Dartmouth, but Cornell sent me their financial aid estimates and offered 40k/59k, whereas Dartmouth is 26k/60k. I got the Dartmouth acceptance package and saw the reconsideration form, so I will be asking them for more aid, but is it likely that I'll receive more aid?

Our family income was ~130k, but my dad lost his job last June so we're making significantly less this year.

Hey batfan,
I was also accepted to Dartmouth with less financial aid than expected, and I have no other Ivy League offers. Then my dad called in this morning and spoke with the financial aid office for a long time explaining our situation (we recently bought a lot of property, but most of it is using loans), and they bumped up my award immediately. So as long as you explain your situation clearly and indicate that you did receive a better award from another school, you should have a fairly good chance. :)

Someone posted on the facebook group that Dartmouth will match the financial aid offer of any other Ivy. Apparently that’s what it said on his/her financial aid sheet.

Yes, Dartmouth states that they will match need-based financial aid offers from other Ivies. You can see it here in the article they just released for accepted students - the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Maria Laskaris:

“As always, we are committed to working with families to help keep Dartmouth affordable and accessible for students,” says Laskaris. “We will match any need-based financial aid awards from our Ivy peers. We want students to base their matriculation decision on what is the right ‘fit’ for them, in terms of their academic and extracurricular aspirations, and not on the small differences in financial aid they receive.”
