Financial Aid--Scholarships of Loan City?

Okay, so my D got accepted today. Pretty exciting. Financial aid, however was disappointing. Has anyone heard about the other scholarships? She applied for other scholarships, but hasn't heard anything and it is not reflected on the financial aid offer. She got a freshman scholarship of about $5000, and then Cal grant. But there was $7000 in loans! Egads! Our EFC is $5000--which they also offered us a parent loan.

Is this the bottom line, or is there a chance for another alumni scholarship or something? Just wondering.

UCLA is not her first choice thankfully.

What kind of aid did others get in. Just curious.

Taken straight from my (lack of) financial aid page
UCLA Costs: $47,136
Gift Aid - $0
Total Net Cost = $47,136
PER YEAR.
awesome.

killthefifi, you have a great attitude. Well, I went there and I had a great time--I am sure you will too.

The UC's don't have grants for out of state/international students and they make that pretty clear. They are looking for these candidates to pay the bills!

But still, any scholarship would be nice.
I'd be willing to pay 40k, seriously.
Adding a few thousand on top of that pushes me over the edge. An extra 7k a year means that I'm paying an extra 28k after 4 years. =[

I wouldn't pay for it for anything but film, but that said, you can probably get by spending less if you live off campus and scrimp.

Honestly, CA is in such a budget crisis that Californians would go ballistic if UC's gave any scholarships to out of staters.

I got a scholarship and I'm out of state... not regents but the $10, 000 one

I'm also OOS and I got a small $1500/yr one, hoping for a bigger one this upcoming year, as my GPA actually improved as a UCLA Student compared to UW entering GPA, and taken a schedule some may consider crazy (4 science classes, 2 being upper div maths + an honors contract in winter quarter, 37 units taken so far, enrolled in another 19 for spring)

Interesting to know. Any other OOS get any money?

i'm from raleigh, north carolina and i was SO EXCITED to find out i was accepted!
...until i saw my financial aid letter..

here's what the page says:
UCLA Costs: $47,136
Gift Aid: $17,566 (Federal Pell Grant $5,350, Scholarship Recognition Award $12,216)

TOTAL Net Cost: $29,570

that's still a lot, isn't it?
btw, my EFC is $0 :( i was planning on paying for college myself (no parent loans..)

brklynmonkey

I would consider that a good package....the only students I know that get more than $17K are Regents Scholars.

Did you receive work study too?

That's a terrible idea. What do you intend on majoring in? How much are your parents willing to pay for school? How much would you have to take in loans? Where else have you applied? UCLA is a wonderful school yes, especially if you're in-state. You are certainly not going to get what you pay for had those funds been applied to a smaller school or a private institution of the same caliber as UCLA. Personally, I'm an OOS student and I've decided to graduate a year earlier to cut off funds and I moved out of the dorms earlier to save money. My parents have been very generous towards my education and I will graduate will minimal debt. As much as I love this school, I would have chosen a different one or taken a gap year at 18. I would have enjoyed an extra year to pick up a major. Doesn't matter now since I plan on going to graduate school but I would be cautious.

Fresnomom

here's what it says under "MEETING NET COST" (which is $29,570)

Federal Work Study $2,200
Federal Stafford Loan + $3,500
Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan + $2,000
Federal Perkins Loan + $1,200

& Parent PLUS Loan + $20,670

now i know nothing about average financial aid packages and what not, but a net cost of $29K is still a lot of money. isn't it??!

brklynmonkey

That is a lot of money.

I am just saying that $17566 is close to the maximum amount of scholarship/grants that the UCs give out (unless you are Regents).

So, instate students with an EFC of $0 are expected to contribute approx $9K/year and out of state students with an EFC of $0 are expected to contribute approx $29K/year.
