Financial Aid - Self-help and student employment

I read on Yale's finaid website http://www.yale.edu/sfas/financial/AwardFA.htm
that parental contributions include the student's summer earnings. So does this mean that effectively, the "self-help" portion is like $6000++ instead of $4200?

To Yalies on finaid - how many hours a week do you have to work to fulfil the $4200 self-help portion, and how much do you work in the summer?

Is it easy to do research (your chosen topic) for pay? Thanks!

I would wait a little on financial aid information since there will hopefully be a major revamp in family/student contribution this year. Should be announced soon.

I wonder what the average student salary is for someone at Yale :-

10 dollars an hour... 10 hrs a week... 30 weeks in a year....

Yale claims you can make up to 3000 dollars a year.

International students do not have to pay a summer contribution (After all, the plane ticket is really expensive.. )

Minimum wage per hour is $10.00 - which is much more than what other universities are offering.

Darn - then why does my finaid package have a larger-than-expected parental contribution which my parents can't afford? Do they calculate all these figures assuming that the accepted student isn't international?

Well, only the summer contribution is waived for international students ... and I'm not sure how they calculate the figures.

Larger-than-expected - you are not the only one :) Many others are complaining about their aid awards as well.... As for me, it was much larger than I expected, but among the other universities that I was accepted to, Yale was the second-most-generous.
