Financial Aid Status at Carnegie Mellon

I was admitted at CMU but have not received financial aid results, yet. Has anyone run into this problem? What is the average financial aid award at Carnegie this year?

Have you submitted all your financial aid documents?

The FAFSA, CSS Profile, Tax Return, etc?

Not so great apparently. Ordinarily they match similar schools; e.g. cornell, RPI, but this year, they are not doing that so much. My son is getting more from RPI, and hasnt’ decided yet, but CMU doesn’t really care.

Times have changed. Many schools (I suspect CMU is one and I am absolutely convinced on others) are filling up (if they can) on slightly lower profile kids with $60K to send in. There’s another kid in my son’s class, who is one of the top 5-10 students in CT and he was rejected at all Ivy’s but Harvard. What a joke, right? No; it’s often just a matter of $ right now.

It is offensive to assume that the kids that are getting in to CMU are “slightly lower profile kids with $60K to send in”. The reality is that we do not really know what exactly got that kid in vs. another kid. Full disclosure- my kid will be full pay at CMU. I am sorry that your kid will possibly be unable to attend but that does not make my kid a “lower profile kid”.

@goingnutsmom: He’s not saying that all full pay kids are lower profile, he’s just saying that some full pay kids may have been given a slight competitive advantage since they can pay full sticker. Many of the full pay students are smarter than the non-pay, but some are not. The poster is not singling your kid out. Also, I’m a full pay student, and quite frankly, it’s smart of an admissions office to admit more students who can pay. Colleges are businesses, so they must make enough to cover expenses.

Sure, I get that. Of course I know that the poster is not singling my kid out but there is a generalization that definitely was conveyed in the statement and we could all be a little more courteous/judicious in our wording on CC.

very interesting
