has anyone gotten anything about financial aid?
when do we get these. does carnegie mellon generally give out good aid?

I talked to a woman in the office a few minutes ago. She said about two weeks after your admission decision.

Mine came with the admissions packet (perhaps because I got a merit award? but it included need-based as well)......

I just got the financial aid info in the mail today...they gave me a Presidential Scholarship. Arghh, this is making my decision hell.

Does everybody receive a financial aid letter of some sort or only people who have applied for financial aid? I was hoping for a merit scholarship, but I am wondering if I should stop waiting for the letter.

i've heard carnegie doesn't give out too much money. is there truth behind this?

My acceptance letter was sent March 22nd, but no FA has showed up online or in the mail...

What gives?

My son's acceptance letter was mailed to him on March 22nd. His financial aid letter was received in the mail on March 31st (in CT). He was able to see the award on line the night before he got the letter in the mail.

I still can't see it online, and it still hasn't shown up in my mailbox.... Anyone else in the same boat?

The same here. No financial aid info.

Same here; vey irritating.

If it doesn't show up soon, I'm going to call and ask. Every day waiting for the FA package delays my chance to get decent housing at the college I end up choosing.

My EFC was $6000 or so (however, my EFC as reported by FAFSA was only $1500... have yet to find out exactly why CMU's calculation was so much higher), and CMU gave me a full undergraduate grant for $21,900, as well as $13,000 in federal loans and work-study. If you include the loans and stuff, that means they covered about 75% of my financial need... so really a matter of opinion. Generous, but still a ton of money for someone on the poor ($25,000/year) ladder rung.

As far as merit-based money goes... as far as I know, they don't give out much at all, and from what I've seen, some on this forum tend to think that minorities tend to soak all the merit money in. I certainly couldn't tell you how valid this is, though.

Just my experience so far.

That package is not bad at all. I'll end with more loans than you. Were you expecting a free ride? Thay know you'll have a good career ahead after graduation.

I didn't say it was bad; in fact, I said it was generous.
Still expensive considering my family income, though. That's all I said.

You gotta love a school that sends a form for review of financial with the financial aid letter. With a request section for what kind of additional aid you would like:

I wonder how many people ask for more loans?

I called them since I hadn't recieved the package yet, and they said they were still waiting on something from me.

So I guess if you don't have it, you might want to call and check.

hsseniorlooking, thanks for posting that info! :D for some reason, mail is extremely slow crossing the PA border into WV, and i really want to request additional aid. i spent about a half hour trying to find an appeals form online. lol about the loans part!! although, they'd be more likely to be granted than grants or possibly work study. besides, it's not like you are forbidden to pay on them while in school, right? it's a bit of a safety net.

I got mine a couple days back. They were the most generous (need-based) out of all of my schools and gave me nearly 7k in a grant and a couple more thousand here and there in loans/work-study, although that is nowhere near enough aid so that my parents can afford it. I'm on the waitlist though and I already confirmed with another school. :[

lol, yea i'd like to work study more and i think i got too much in grant money

It's fairly easy to find non-work study jobs, so if your work study isn't that high, you should be able to find a campus job after you've used up your work study, and you can just use that money...
