Financial Aid worrying

I will be attending the University of North Texas in the fall. I am an independent student (grandmother is legal guardian), therefore my EFC would be 0. Between Pell, State Grants, Institutional Grants, and work Study, Would I have to pay anything out of pocket for my college expenses? I want to keep loans as my last possible resort. Can someone help?

I am ranked 28/176, 3.7 HS GPA, 3.8 Dual Credit GPA, and a 20 on ACT / 1050 on New SAT.

Well…the cost to attend if you dorm there is just about $28,000.

Pell is $5900

Direct Loan is $5500 plus $4000 more because you are independent.

That’s about $15,000.

What state grants are there for low income students in Texas?

Have you tried running the Net Price Calculator on the UNT web site?

There are some, the amounts vary.

I have, I’m not sure about the amount of institutional aid that UNT will offer.

This is an independent student. If the UNT net price calculator has a question about this…fine. Otherwise…it isn’t going to be particularly accurate.

I did not see one. It asks for parental information.

Right…and you aren’t required to give parental info. It’s really set up for dependent students.

Ask your HS guidance counselor about Texas state grants. The GC should have that info.

I just took a look. Their NPC isn’t very helpful since it only estimates tuition and fees. @EducatedMister - Have you been accepted and received a financial aid letter from the school?

@TQfromtheU I have been accepted, I have not been awarded yet.

I tried the UNT aid calculator, but it is giving a wide range up to full aid. If you have definitely completed and submitted your FAFSA information, give them about a week and call the financial aid office at UNT.
