Financial Aid

Anyone receive financial aid packages yet?

Not specifically need-based financial aid, but my son was offered a very nice scholarship several weeks ago. We still can’t afford the tuition.

I mailed a letter to Furman yesterday requesting a meeting with the office financial aid (hinting at need based financial aid or them bumping up his scholarship).

I tought they were sent on the 31st were they not?

D got acheivers scholarship today. We did not expect it so we are happy!

Sent from my Droid using CC App

Financial aid letter came today. Still can’t afford it. Hope my son has fun at USC.

got a scholarship i wasnt expecting today, wasnt really considering furman before but this switched things up

We got a letter from the President encouraging my daughter to attend but no scholarship letter…was hoping to get a little something…but we are in NJ… perhaps something will come tomorrow if they were mailed on 3/31…

I received my aid package on Saturday, April 2nd. It included the Achievers Scholarship, but still left me with about $30,000 in loans at the end of every year. I am wondering if this is typical of Furman’s financial aid packages.

Our “bill” was for $28k after a Furman scholarship, after a state scholarhip, after subsidised and unsubsidised stafford loans, and after a projected $1500 in work study.

I would say that your package was typical because it is similar to ours, but not really. There has also been at least one poster on CC saying that he got a “full ride”, so there is probably no “typical”.

Disappointed with Fin Aid received; two loans offered - Sub and UnSub plus work study.

Anyone with experience in getting additional aid? Did you call the FA office? and what did you say to get additional aid? I called this morning and left a message so I’m hoping that I can get guidance here as to how to ask for more FA.

Thank you.

deezee1980-Call the financial aid office and your child’s admission counselor. Furman, in our experience has become MORE generous, not less, since 2008 with merit money-such as Achiever’s and Honors’ scholarships. Students we knew who were accepted for current school year, received approximately double the amount our kids ( same scores, GPA) as our kids received in 2008. Furman has also begun awarding student grants with the economic downturn, so inquire about that. Furman’s goal for the coming year is to increase the number of students in the freshman class by around 100 students. To get that type of yield, FA office will need to step up.

We sent letters to three different departments at Furman, including the financial aid office, and recieved no response. We did the same at USC and recieved a response from each person we contacted.

I would have loved for my son to have attended Furman, but it is simply out of our financial reach, even with the generous music scholarship, work study, loans, Life scholarship, and SC Tuition grant. The total bill was $28k, our eft was $13k and even the $13k would have been difficult because our financial situation is continuing to deteriorate due to the economy (self employed).

USC is a fine school though, I think my son will be just as well off there.

Georgiatwins-thanks for the suggestions. Called the fin aid office today and asked about the appeals process. Was informed to submit a letter (email is acceptable) stating the reasons and how much we are seeking. Was told that the fin aid offer will be reviewing the appeals on April 28 and notifications will be send out on the 29th.

Crossing our fingers that Furman will come back with grants for fin aid.

Good luck to everyone.
