Financial Aid

Has anyone received their financial aid package yet?

I received mine yesterday in SoCal.

Fin aid package arrived on the east coast today.

Two days ago, I think.

How were they? I got mine today too and it looked really good until I saw 15k in loans. =/

Mudd’s aid was very confusing because of the Cal Grant. I talked with the office twice and I’m still confused. :frowning: I was asking about situations such as, what if my son got the full tuition scholarship, how would that change it? How do outside scholarships effect it?

On my sons, there were 11K in loans but no work study. :frowning: I guess Mudd doesn’t offer it?? Too bad. Now, my son has an online job, so he’ll be able to offset some of the costs, but it seems, due to the Cal Grant, even winning the full tuition scholarship will still leave the 11K gap as they reduce other grants. Very confusing and I plan on talking with f. aid at the admitted student program, for sure!

I don’t remember exact numbers, but several schools (even UC Berkeley!) offered me a better financial aid package than did HMC. My parents and I were pretty disappointed, though not shocked, given that Mudd isn’t as well-endowed as some of the other schools that admitted me.

I was offered a work study for around 2k. I’m kind of disappointed too, as I’ve heard great things about their financial aid. Hopefully it’ll be negotiable during the admitted student program.

What I actually found surprising was that (for my best friend) Mudd’s offer was a bit more generous than Pomona’s (and Pomona is by far the richest LAC). He was also able to ask for a bit more (though his family has some considerable medical bills that I’m sure helped), so Mudd is considerably cheaper than Pomona (though, to be fair, he hasn’t yet appealed Pomona’s offer).

We have appealed a school’s fin aid offer in the past with some measure of success. The main thing is to be able to offer supporting documentation for anything that you state in your appeal letter. In our situation, we had mounting medical bills for documentation and a physician’s letter. I do not know how HMC’s appeal process works, but if you intend to appeal your offer I would do it in writing now so that they have it for admitted students weekend.
