Financial Aid

I am looking to go to UW-Madison after I graduate to major in actuarial science. I am going to be a senior this fall with a GPA of 3.77 (Unweighted) and 5.51 (Weighted, out of 6). I have an ACT score of 32 (36 English, 33 Reading, 30 Math, 30 Science) and I rank above the top 10% in my class. I will have taken 6 APs by the time I graduate. How well will I be able to receive scholarships based on these stats?

Are you in-state or out of state? Makes a difference.

Unless you are a direct-admit to the business school, you will begin your undergraduate life in the College of Letters & Science. There are about 30 scholarships for incoming freshman who complete the online L&S scholarship application. There were over 1500 applicants for these 30 scholarships. Only a few (less than 5) are for non-Wisconsin residents. Of the 30 scholarships, most are single year scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500.

Aside from these L&S Scholarships, there IS one Actuarial Science scholarship that you can apply for (not sure if it depends on residency) - this is for an incoming freshman and is $2,000/year for four years.

In response to Rousse54, I am in state.
Are there any private (i.e. not from Madison) scholarships that would provide a decent amount towards college based on my credentials?

The best bet for private scholarships is normally through your community or high school.

IMHO you are in the vast majority of potential Wisc-Madison potential students. Your credentials are very good, but not off-the-charts GREAT. Scholarships and merit awards are virtually impossible, and if you are one of the lucky ones, the awards are typically $500 - $1500 for a year. Not each year, but for one year.

As another poster stated, most High Schools and local communities have more scholarsihp opportunities based on merit than you’re likely to see at Madison.
