Financial Aid

I was accepted in late December, I think, but only got $15,000 scholarship. Can anyone tell me how good the financial aid is at Knox in terms of grants. I'm willing to consider loans but my parents are two teachers nearing retirement age, so grants are much more appreciated.

According to their CDS for 2012-2013 school year:

Number of students who applied for need-based financial aid was 353.
Number of students who were awarded any need-based scholarship or grant aid was 295.
On average, the percentage of need that was met of students who were awarded any need-based aid was 90%.

So, COA of around $46K minus your merit award of $15K and whatever is your EFC is (lets assume $13K) leaves you with need of $18K. In ideal situation, if Knox ‘meets’ 90% of those $18K (around $16 and could include grants, loans, etc) and leaves your family with gap of $2K + your EFC.

We submitted FAFSA and Knox Fin Aid form couple of weeks ago and are waiting for the whole package, before making any decision. Good luck to you.

Hello, I am a current student at Knox. Knox gave me great financial aid. The 2nd best out of my 13 acceptances (mostly CTCL schools). I got grants, but I’m taking 7.5k in loans a year, which a lot of people have to do. I would have had to take loans anywhere I would have gone. But Knox is raising their tuition by $3,000 next year, which may hurt financial aid packages. We shall see, I hope not!

Here are some articles from our student run newspaper:

If you have any questions about Knox feel free to PM me.

Thanks early_college for posting the articles. Very informative. My son has got admission at Knox and its in his short list. We will be visiting the college soon but the financial situation and the a small endowment makes me think twice. Do you that the financial situation has hurt the quality of the education? Has Knox lost any good professors recently due to its financial situation or have they had any issue in attracting good teachers? Finally, knowing what you know now, would you have still chosen Knox?

I had a really bad fall term, but things have started to get a lot better. However, I have always said this: Knox is a GREAT school academically. I do not think the financial situation has hurt the quality of the education. However, Knox is trying to add 200 more students to the school population. I, personally, do not think there is room for 200 students. Also, if you ask upperclassmen, they will tell you class sizes aren’t as small as they once were when they were freshmen. A lot of students do get closed out of classes due to a size limit though and there are often scheduling problems with getting all the classes you want (the majority of classes are just offered 2nd or 3rd period). I LOVE the 3-3 calendar though.

Knox hasn’t lost any good professors due to the financial situation yet anyways. However, Knox is cutting retirement benefits for them, so some may leave: [Amott: College to cut retirement benefits](http://www.theknoxstudent.com/news/2013/01/23/amott-college-to-cut-retirement-benefits/)

In my opinion, Knox isn’t worth 50k a year, but that’s only because if you compare it to the other college’s I got accepted to, Knox’s facilities do not compare. Everything is just so old here which is part of the “historic” charm I guess. If I was considering to go to Knox this year, it would just depend on my financial aid package. If I got a great package, I would not blink an eye in coming. However, I am not sure if this tuition increase will hurt prospective/current students. I am a little bit worried because current students do not get their financial aid package until June, so if Knox isn’t affordable, I will be stuck since most transfer applications are way past due. But again, Knox’s package was really affordable. Schools like Lawrence, Wooster, Allegheny, Ursinus, etc were all doubled than what I currently pay at Knox.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask :)

Thanks early_college for your response. My son is also considering Lawrence university, Centre college along with Knox and cost wise they are pretty much the same after the merit aid. Good luck with your future plans.

@early_college. I hope you’re wrong about Wooster! I got the same amount from their Dean’s scholarship.

Every person/family is different, but I got a 10k scholarship from Knox. I originally got a 5k scholarship from Wooster, but then they bumped it up to 10k after an appeal, but Wooster was still doubled. They didn’t give me much need based aid compared to Knox. Wooster would have been a top choice if I didn’t get such a crummy financial aid package.

I’m an international and got accepted under EA plan with 15k merit scholarship, 8k grant and about 2,5k campus employment. The grant is not the same to everyone because 2 other people from my high school also got accepted, one with 5k grant and one with 9k. The merit scholarship is based on your SAT scores and GPA, campus employment may be the same. However, we all are international so we don’t have loan and I think the financial award may be different from US residents.
