Financial Aid

So I am going to a CC and I just registered for my classes today and I saw the amount that I had to pay and the date that it had to be paid by. I wanted to know how do I find out if I'm receiving any fafsa money.

Did you fill out a fafsa application? If so, see if your school has a financial aid link on your portal/account. If you can’t find anything, call the FA office at your cc. If you didn’t fill out a fafsa app, that’s the first thing you need to do.

I did fill out the application. I got and EFC number but I’m not sure what that stands for. I also have checked my portal and it says “You have no financial aid awards available for viewing in this aid year” so I don’t know what this means. And I was reviewing my fafsa and it was talking about a Pell Grant I’m not sure what that is.

Did you indicate the name of the school you are going to attend on your FAFSA, so that the application/EFC info was sent to your school? If not, I think you can do that now if you go in and update your FAFSA app.

If you did, check your FA portal and see if there is any information about your Resources or EFC. If so, your school did receive your application. Either way, you should call your school and get more information. They may not have notified all students about their FA awards yet. My son’s school does not notify current students until late July about their FA awards.

The Pell grant is “gift” money–free money from the federal government that does not have to be repaid.

Well I’m sure the school did receive the EFC because I was required to fill out some paper work and even get some IRS transcripts from my parents. On the FA portal it just shows the year I applied for FAFSA which is this year. Well I’ll take the safest bet and just call or even make a visit to the office. Thanks for the help.

How does one get this “gift” money?

If you’re eligible for pell, it will be part of your financial aid package which is disbursed by each individual school.

It sounds like you were selected for verification if you completed some forms and sent in tax transcripts. When did you complete these things? It does take time to process verification info…and your aid will not be disbursed until that process is complete.

I would suggest you CALL the financial aid office at your school to find out the status of your financial aid application. They will be able to tell you what is going on!
