Financial Aid

I applied to Wisconsin Madison and received acceptance around the 13th of December. When do you think the financial packet will arrive? I did receive my acceptance packet but just wondering how long it usually takes for the financial to come in

You don’t receive a financial aid packet.

First, you need to wait until January 1 when you can submit the FAFSA.

You will find out your financial aid award in spring, through your Student Center account, after completing any additional required forms. Note that you will be required to submit tax return transcripts for your parents’ tax return and your own.

Try the 2013-2014 Net Price Calculator for a general idea, once you know your EFC.

Go to the finaid.wisc.edu website and look on the right menu bar for the calculator.

Why do some schools then send you a letter saying your scholarships and how much you would have to pay?I received this from a couple of schools already

Do you have an idea of your EFC? Are you a Wisconsin resident? If you are a Wisconsin resident, did you apply to be a Covenant Scholar in 8th grade? The NPC on the finaid.wisc.edu website is very easy to use.

UW-Madison does not give any automatic merit aid that I know of; the only aid is financial need-based; thus to get an idea of the amount, you need to know your EFC from FAFSA.

Are these ‘other schools’ private schools? Perhaps these other schools give merit-based aid based on your ACT/SAT/GPA figures (Again, UW-Madison does not do that).

I see from your other posts that you have a twin brother, you are an Illinois resident and that you say your parents can’t afford a lot since you and your brother will both be in college.

I entered an EFC of $10,000 into UW-Madison’s calculator and here are the results:

Student Profile

Residency Status Illinois
Academic Level Freshman
Dependency Status Dependent
Housing Plan Residence Halls
EFC ? 10000

Change student selections profile

Total Cost: $40,671.00

Estimated Need Calculation for 2013-2014

Estimated Net Price Summary for 2013-2014

Total Estimated Grant Aid - $3,000.00
Estimated Net Price ? $37,671.00

Estimated Eligibility for Other Aid for 2013-2014
Federal Work-Study ?: $2,200.00

Total Estimated Other Aid: $10,100.00

Estimated Remaining Cost for 2013-2014
Estimated Net Price $37,671.00
Estimated Other Aid - $10,100.00

So in this calculation, you’d receive a grant of $3,000 and your family would to pay the other $37,000 through loans and savings.

Have you asked your parents how much they can pay for college each year for you? Do you have an idea of your EFC? Have you applied to a ‘financial safety’ in Illinois?
