financial aid??

How would one describe the financial aid at MHC? Are they generous? I live in a single parent household- my mother makes about $40000-50000 a year, and we are a family of 4 (my older brother is in college and she is struggling to pay the EFC).

They are known for being very good, as they meet 100% of need, but as you probably know, it’s need as they calculate it. They were strictly middle-of-the-road as packages go for us, but there are tons of factors to consider and everyone has different circumstances. They were still good enough that one of my daughters is starting there in the fall. :slight_smile:

Go to the website and run the net price calculator; it’s very accurate if you enter your info accurately.

I’m from a solidly middle class family (US citizens) and we did not receive any aid at all. My brother is also headed to colllege this year, (his school is $60,000) and even with both my brother’s and my tution totalling $120,000/year, we were told that we have no need.

@greengriffins25

By what measure are you middle class?

According to Pew Research:

And, of course, assets matter too.

I agree with @PNWedwonk – there’s more going on with @greengriffins25 's financial picture (although maybe she’s talking strictly merit? They can be weird about merit, especially if you apply early). Anyone in Pew’s middle-income range would receive aid from MHC, unless they had large amounts of assets. This is especially true if there’s a sibling in college.

You can play with this yourself on their website. Instead of your income of $50k enter $100k. I’d be floored if there weren’t still a lot of aid.

If that is so @greengriffins then your parents must have lots of assets (paid off mortgage, another house). It doesn’t make any sense. However, if you received merit, it would displace any financial need. And quite honestly, it’s better to receive merit (which you can rely on year to year) than financial aid which varies according to income levels.

So, our K (Kid for Kid – they don’t identify as a “D” or an “S” :wink: ) got something like $8,000 need-based aid. Our income is squarely in the middle-income range but I own TWENTY PER CENT of a house (with my 4 siblings) so the assets killed any additional aid. Hard, since our income is not high and we have zero access to that asset…
