CMU does stress diversity, which is why as I said before, "all other factors being equal, it would probably be easier for a woman to get merit aid from CIT and H&SS." However even though it is easier, I still think female merit aid winners in general have stats well above the average applicant. So unless your daughter can signifacantly improve her math/science scores, I would think that her chances at merit aid are limited. Don't feel disappointed; understand this is a very competitive process and like I said before, I think your daughter's chances for acceptance are strong.

By the other college comment, I assume you mean MIT. I would say that CMU is certainly not as strong of an affirmative action school as MIT but is stronger than a school like Caltech. Overall I'd say we fall somewhere in between, closer to the top than the bottom.

Hope this helps.

Yes, that's helpful. I think there are a lot of good engineering schools and when you get right down to it, I'm not so sure that there's a big difference in the job opportunities if you get a BS degree from CMU, Case, Lehigh, RPI, Ga Tech...or Texas Tech. I could be wrong...I've been out of college for quite a few years. I personally have a BSEE from a public college which is a far, far cry from the Ivy Leagues...I mean far cry. But when I graduated, I got a job with one of the big oil companies.

On my early comment about huge disproportionate number of males .vs. females, I understand CMU has 88% males in Mech Engr...I don't know about you but that's huge from where I come from.

CMU also has huge proportions of girls in certain years of Drama and Design and Marketing but I wouldn't classify all of HSS/CFA/Tepper to be woman-dominated.

CIT overall does have a majority of males but with regards to aid, my point was that CMU will probably give more aid to the girl under the case that all stats are the same. Bach is right in that CMU is very competitive. CIT will still expect the same scores/stats from females as males and a male with better scores than a female may get more aid/attention. CMU cares about diversity and tries to balance out ratios but it still has competitive standards.

This year's freshmen are very balanced but understand that CMU's priority is still to bring in the best student body and not necessarily the most balanced.
