Financial Aid

Keep in mind that NYU considers loans "financial aid". So, if you get a $20,000 scholarship, and I get a $20,000 loan, NYU will say that we both got "financial aid packages of $20,000."

Daniel, every college considers loans a part of the financial aid package.

That may be - my point was just that in the eyes of the school the $20,000 loan is equally as generous as the $20,000 gift, even though this not really the case. So, NYU can say that their average aid package is $17,000 or $18,000 but there is not differentiation between what is actual aid and what is just a deffered payment plan.

Actually, USN&WR sas that the average amount of gift aid such as scholarships or grants is $12,371 with 52% being the proportion receiving such grants. However, the average amount of need met was 67%, not the near 100% you get with colleges of that calibre. These are 2003-04 figures. When I went to the information session, the numbers I noted seemed to be very close to these USN&WR figures.

Still, when you are applying to NYU and see that 67% of demonstrated need is met, and you see that whopping cost, and look at the average of what is given, you have o expect that it is going to require loans, work and austerity if your family cannot comfortably afford that tab.

Here is the deal... NYU financial aid at first glance sucks but there are so many ways to get money. I pay $6,000 a year to go to school at NYU but it took 2 years to get there. I was admitted with average stats to CAS but I am on an athletics team. Because of that I got 22,000 dollars a year in aid. After my first semester I was on deans list and I protested my package. They came back and gave me 4,000 dollar more. At the same time I had friends who didn't do well and the next year they had to pay more. That said financial aid at NYU is all about making yourself valuable to them. If you are the president of a prominent club or a great student you will get more aid. Another step people can take is to protest their pacakage. I secretly think NYU is laughing at the fact that people accept their packages as final and end up paying them. I am currently an RA and althugh you can't do that until your junior year I reccomend it to all people who need more aid. Althogh it is a lot of work you get free housing, free meal plan, and half price on books. It is also extremely rewarding and a lot of fun. You can also be a peer educator your sophomore year and get half price books and a free meal plan. There is a lot of money out there so if you got your package and are thinking how am I going to make this work, you definitely can.

i also got 20k in SCHOLRASHIP, not loans. they "estimated" about 10k in loans, so my TOTAL fin aid package was 30k.

i think NYU's FA is bull.
They gave me a $1000 Tisch trustee scholarship
and an stafford loan.
so total package = 3,665 i think...my family is upper-middle class, i have two younger brothers and i'm ending up like, $100k in debt by the time I graduate. ugh...and i wanted to go to grad school too.

askaboutNYU, what other opportunities are there?
