Financial aid horror stories-how bad can it be?

can anyone that goes to NYU or has rceived a FA package comment on NYU's stinginess? I'd like to see some examples of their nototrious financial aid cynism... I'm applying and money is a huge issue, but all those rumours are getting me more and more dishearted. I know that getting top education in manhattan can't be cheap, but still do I have a reason to worry?

several of my friends did not receive a dime. some upper middle class, some not so.

then again one friend of mine whose family is quite comfortable and well off got a nice chunk of money.

it's very weird and i'm really worried too, considering last year's income from my family was much MUCH higher than this year's due to some really bad incidents/situations.

guess we'll just wait and see.

I'm worried too. I got into GSP but before I can be as excited as I would like to be, I have to make sure I can get the money.

I will do anything to go...I just have to find ways to get money if they don't give me much.

I am in CAS.... when entering NYU, I had, according to the FAFSA, an expected family contribution of about $2,000. Of the roughly $40,000 a year for tuition and housing, the school gave me a full financial aid package. However, only about $3,000 of that was actual grant money. The rest was tens of thousands in loans.

See, as long as I can GET the money...I don't care where it comes from...even if I do pay it back for years to come.

I'm just scared that I won't even be able to get loans w/o a cosigner with good credit.

Sorry for another question but if they do give a full package with lots of loans, do you still need a cosigner?

Does anyone know of places to go that are not extremly picky with credit of the cosigner?

If the loans are part of your aid package, then that's arranged by NYU. I don't see why you would need a cosigner as it is assumed that you will be paying off these loans after you graduate.

I'm not entirely sure, though.

Did any GSPers get financial aid info?

I agree with Alexkay. It really depends on who you talk to here at NYU. For example, I didn't even apply for financial aid and end up getting a $15K merit scholarship, so I'm really not complaining. I have some classmates that are delighted about their financial aid, and others who feel they should get more.

I got no financial aid haha.

Found that out today.

Actually no. I got 1750 loan.

And 5,000 in scholarship.

I'm excited about the merit.

Butttt horror story? Kinda. My dad has recently been declared, disable, chemically dependent on pain killers and manic depressive/bipolar...our income changed drastically plus a lot of other factors. Still nothing.

It's okay though! I'm really excited that I got something!

I havent gotten my decision, but im pretty sure I wont be getting any money.

However, I'm really hoping on getting into the honors (scholars? i forget what its called) program and perhaps to get merit scholarships.

How good an applicant do you have to be to get some merit money? and the honor/scholars program (in stern)? I really want to get into that. prays

Thanks, guys.

I'm thinking about applying to NYU Ed. next year. This thread has made me really worried about finacial aid. My family makes just under 50,000 a year and I have 4 siblings (i'm the oldest). Does anyone think that I'll get much financial aid at NYU?

Hey guys, I got into GSP but before I even consider to go I need to know when they tell you how much Financial Aid you can get? I will be sending FAFSA soon but I already sent that ED FA form. Do I have to call them up?
Also The aide that they give you, its mostly loans right? I thought they were more like grants...

NYU does not profess to meet anywhere near 100% of need. Everyone who applies should be aware of this, it isn't a secret. Every applicant is automatically considered for merit scholarships, which are awarded to the top 10% of applicants. These range in size from $1000-$26,000. There are very few at the top of that range and they are reserved for the students with the absolute top academic stats. The average f/a award at NYU is generally in the $18,000-19,000 range, most of which is made up with loans which you'll have to repay. Keep in mind that it's going to cost you roughly $45,000 in total per year at NYU and fees go up annually.

Honestly, those of you who are very concerned with f/a shouldn't have applied E.D. NYU tells you quite openly that if f/a is a concern you should apply R.D., then you have the opportunity to compare f/a packages.

lol i know, my parents have my bills covered. but then again, they are somewhat rich

I am worried about money but I applied ED. The difference though is that I do not wish to compare financial aid packages. As long as I get the money SOMEHOW I will go. I understand why it would not be a good idea to go ED if you need to worry about money but I don't care what other schools give me.

I just got my NYU f/a sheet. I can get an estimated $14,000 in total aid. $5.5K is actualy merit while the rest is loans and work study. I'm thinking I probably won't accept NYU's offer because GSP kind of throws off my major and Paying 16K from pocket is still tough. I would love to go to NYU regardless but I think I'm gonna have to pass or just go any SUNY that accepts me and maybe in senior year try to transer to a scholl like NYU for the diploma. Still I am kind of happy that at least with my grades NYU considered accepting me. Not a total loss I suppose. Just curious, what did you guys get in estimated f/a?

NYU is seriously giving me $200 a year according to my sheet...is there anything I can do to try to increase this or should I wait for FAFSA?

My NYU package is 19,000...7,000 of that is scholarships.

I now need 26,000 in outside loans. I can't decide what I should do. Is there a chance they will increase the amount?

My package is about $3000 in LOANS. I dont even get any grant. So I'm really considering not going, even though I got in early decision. My family is not poor, however I don't know if it is worth the money. However, I don't want to reject Stern's offer right away.

Is there any possible way to reject their offer in april?? To not withdraw from other schools?

And if I decided not to go to NYU right now, should I just not pay the deposit?

sigh shouldn't have applied ED. My mistake. I still love NYU...but I just don't know if it is worth it.

We have to send the deposit in three weeks right?

Also, when do we find out about Scholar's program??
