I was told during my vist at GW that it prides itself in giving the most financial aid out of all the colleges in the nation. What exactly does this mean and what is the average amount of aid given?

very difficult to answer that question although their
loan totals are very high

supposedly the average amount of financial aid given is 33-35K a year

Well, um, they gave me a bunch...like almost 50k, with 5k in loans., but most out of all the colleges in the nation? I dont think so.

Does the school usually give a large percent of need?

On the college board website, it says they meet an average of 91% of need.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but GW gave me the best FA package out of similar schools (BU, BC, Northwestern)-- had a FAFSA EFC of around 9500, and ended up with 41K in aid, including the Stafford and Perkins. So basically, GW met 100% of my need according to the CSS profile. It probably helped that I was at/near the top of the applicant pool. The tuition and FA guarantee is what really makes me comfortable with the package.

It doesn't compare to Ivy League schools or liberal arts colleges (such as Amherst), but if you are in need i.e. not upper middle class they give you quite a substantial amount. I have about $9,000 a year in loans-and I qualify for a full Pell Grant if you were wondering about my financial situation.

Sidenote: most of GW financial aid is in the form of loans though, especially if you are middle class/upper middle class.

We received almost 35K in grant, minimal student loan, the rest we can cover and is very close to our EFC. NYU gave us a piddly amount, totally ignored our EFC and would have made us take out loans around 30K per year. GW definitely considered our situation and created a package to meet it.

We were offered 36K [26K grant/10K loans]
79% of need
$10,000 gap from our EFC

Is GWU worth applying ED to if I am expecting to apply for FA? I am a twin with parents who make over 100,000 with a brother who just graduated from college. I know its difficult to answer but I just don't want to apply, get accepted, and then be left with a load of debt. If I email the financial aid office, would they be any help?

bump......
