Yes, $5,500 is the maximum federal loan money they're allowed through FAFSA to give UNLESS your parents are refused for a direct plus loan. That's why everyone keeps getting $5500.

i want the maximum fin. aid not some loan. Full ride. Why not?

Under Financial Aid Notices, it says No Award Notices Found. Does that mean I didn't get anything from Michigan and that I will be paying full tuition (+ board, room)?

(I received acceptance email yesterday if that's any relevance at all).

Financial Aid is rolling, you won't find out till april probably.

I was accepted for Early Response, but I still haven't gotten any award notice...perhaps it goes by who sends in the CSS profile and FAFSA first, though I did send both in a timely manner.

I don't have to accept my acceptance until I get see my FA package... right?

Hi all. Officially awards were not to start until Mid March, meaning the 15th, and rolling, meaning will be releasede sequentially according to something like when stuff was in, when student was accepted. etc.

-- Be_somebody: Wait til they send you an email. No Award Notices means they haven't created your total package yet.
--DRMAN54, correct, you do not need to accept until May 1st.
--PorterGoBlue - sorry you are disappointed. If this is your official award and you only received the $5500 (leaving 10 k gap, correct?) in loans you could perhaps consider sending them a letter about how much you love the school and how cost prohibitive attending is. However, note that your high EFC makes you ineligible for anything other than loan federally and makes it more difficult for U of M to rationalize giving you grant money (when they are a state school and there is so much need with low efc).

Hi kmcrrindle, can you answer me this question: I checked the Umich website and it seems that they only require the CSS and FAFSA forms, even for international students. So I sent these on March 1st. Are these the only things they need for financial aid?

thanks.

Hi dyd. I live in MI now so my circumstances are different (international students may be a better resource for you here) but yes, they need CSS and FAFSA...they may also need the financing statement for immigration to get you a visa (the "yes-I-can-pay-for-my-college" document -- but will ask you for it if they need it.) You will likely be late getting a notice of fin aid package (eg. since it's rolling and min. 4 weeks from receipt puts you April 1 or later). Once they email you, then you'll be able to see what they might do institutionally (they call is Michigan Grant or Michigan loan I believe, that's the school's own money) and whether or not you qualify for any FAFSA loans. Once you know that, then you will want to check out OSAP. Not sure that you can get OSAP and FAFSA at the same time. I know that at Canadian schools, we'd have had to have picked one or the other. That will work out okay for you because I don't think OSAP starts taking apps until May. Feel free to PM me when you hear from them if you'd like any help. Don't want to scare you but U of M is not a "meets full need" school for international or OOS and the gap varies greatly.
Cheers,
K

oh...that clears things up a bit...thanks :)

i dont have my official finaid package yet, but when i check wolverine access, and i click on the link "eligibility summary", it says something along the lines of "EFC: fall-winter: 24k, spring-summer: 3k"
is this accurate?

Is nothing official until you get an email?

Currently, I have no aid, including scholarships. I was accepted early March. I did not send in a FAFSA/CSS form (I’m international). Am I still eligible for merit-based scholarships?

Unlikely because I believe merit was determined for students accepted by feb. 1…call and check.

Damn Guess I’m getting 0 aid for OOS tuition. Ah well, better start looking at those outside scholarships.

You should call Fin Aid anyway to see if there’s anything available IF YOU FILED CSS and FAFSA right away. In the case of Out of State students, sometimes the school will issue grants. But they will certainly not do anything if you haven’t filed those forms – it’s the foundation for all the need-based aid.

Also, some departments operate differently, eg. School of Music, Theatre and Dance is just now sending out merit letters this week, I believe. Those are audition-based awards.

What country are you from? Eg., if you are from Canada, OSAP will give you the federal portion of the program to attend U of M (believe it’s about $7500 in loans).
Again, just call fin aid as soon as possible so that you can find out what your options are and make an informed decision about whether you can afford to attend!
Good luck!

michigan FA office is actually very prompt on the FA things. I filed my fafsa like early jan, and only did the CSS 3 days ago, and today i got an offer already! i got like 25k in grants, and some other loans… pretty generous actually, considering its only a public…
