Financial Aid Award Posted

My daughter's financial aid package was posted today on Wolverine Access. We received a $3,500 subsidized student loan. That's it but better than nothing.

I received the same thing today. I guess Michigan is getting crossed off the list. Full pay isn’t possible for a middle class OOS student. Too bad, I was planning on attending. I guess I have to hope I get into one of the reach RD schools I applied to. This month just got much more stressful

Yeah, it’s tough. At schools like Michigan, the demand is so high they have enough people willing and able to pay the full freight. My daughter was always leaning towards Illinois, but the cost differential probably seals the deal.

I received a 5,500$ loan that is subsidized as well. Now I’m just waiting on the scholarship awards but I’m going to be attending for sure and being an in-state student, cost isn’t really that big of a factor anyways.

OOS. Only offered the 3500 loan which is the same as saying zero financial aid. It’s like they’re not even trying to meet OOS financial need. Strange for a school in the top 10 of endowments (8 billion). We have received over 20K in FA from several other schools in grants/scholarships (not counting loans). Hard to believe any OOS family would shell out 52K per year, 208K over 4 years via loans and assets. But someone must be doing it. Makes much more sense to attend schools with better FA packages or a public flagship for one third the cost. DD will still attend Michigan though by using my GI Bill which pays 100% and then some of the cost. We would have preferred to attend on FA and save the GI Bill for Grad School, where it’s worth even more.

In-state, and I was offered a 3500 subsidized loan, a 2500 work study, and roughly 15000 in scholarships and grants. Way more generous than I expected!

To those with disappointing offers, I’m sorry. I sincerely wish UM could be as supportive of out-of-state students as they are with in-state ones.

They are a state university. It is not really their goal to provide an inexpensive education to OOS students.

UofM is a state public university and is very clear on their website that they do not meet need for out of state kids and internationals. It’s not even buried in the fine print. I’m always surprised that out of state kids and parents are surprised.

In state, got nothing except the $1500 merit scholarship (usable for only 1 year) I received a month ago.

I am in-state, and found out I will receive about $5500 in grants, $2500 work study, and roughly $5500 in loans.

I am out of state. I received a total of ~$48k in loans, scholarship and grants.

I must say I was blown away when I saw this as I gave up on my hopes of going to U of M due to the cost (I expected the bill to be close to $20k which is close to impossible for my family).

I am so grateful but also baffled.

Does anyone know if you have received your financial aid award, does that mean that you will probably not receive any scholarships at this point?

“They are a state university. It is not really their goal to provide an inexpensive education to OOS students.”

Exactly.

I’m an in-state student and was offered quite a hefty sum of grants/scholarships. However, it says “estimated” and all the accept boxes are grayed out. They said I had to submit an additional Non-tax filer paper. Does anyone know if the amount in grants/scholarships will change drastically from “estimated” to “final”.
