When I received my first, unofficial financial aid award letter, it showed that I was to receive a University of California grant for around $6,000, but didn't allot me any Cal Grant money. It turned out that someone screwed up in reviewing my FAFSA and reported that my family had about double the income of reality, so, after fixing that, I was given around $7700 in Cal Grant A funds. When I received my official financial aid award letter about a month ago, both of these grants were shown, however I looked again just the other day and I still had my Cal Grant money, but my $6,000 University of California grant was reduced to $0. Does anyone know if there was some sort of request or form I had to fill out in order to receive the UC grant, or was it rescinded because I got Cal Grant money? In any case, I desperately need that 6 grand, and if this has happened to anyone else I'd love to know what you did to fix it....

It was most likely because you got the Cal Grant. What is your EFC? If it’s like… 20k or so then it would make sense, because then you’d still be paying what your supposed expected contribution is.

If there is a change in your Cal Grant award (higher or lower), they will readjust your financial aid award to balance it out. The first award you were told you were going to get (6,000) was taking account that you had received 0 in your Cal Grant. I think your UC grant was reduced to 0 because you got a large Cal Grant award.

My EFC is around $9200, but this is unrealistic because, although my sole provider (mom) makes an above-average income, well over 60% of her after-taxes income goes to rent and it is unlikely that she’s credit-worthy for a loan… do you know if there are means of negotiating with the financial aid office for the second grant, because I hope your and RRed’s scenario isn’t immutable…
