I'm actually not sure whether this threat belongs here or in College Search, but it concerns financial aid so here goes:

I'm taking to heart the advice about safety schools - that you should choose your 'safeties' with as much care as other possibilities, because there is a decent chance that that's where your student may be going. I'm also taking to heart the advice that a true safety has three qualities - guaranteed admission, guaranteed affordability, and your child actually WANTS to attend the school (this is from another CC thread).

I'm also taking seriously the advice that having an acceptance from at least one safety early in the process will cut down a lot of stress.

My question concerns the financial aspect of a safety school. My DD (junior in a large public suburban high school) is an excellent student:

3.8-3.9 unweighted GPA (depending on how it's calculated, her h.s. doesn't include 9th grade

I would strongly suggest applying to at least two such schools, so she has a choice if it should turn out that those end up being her only options. And visit the schools!!!

Kkmama, the threat of a long, involved, and most likely extremely boring post! (see the post redux, which I’ve just completed off-line and will paste in - I’ve learned my lesson about composing on-line).

And thank you dodgersmom for your suggestions. I realized I need to look beyond ‘just the stats’ (guess we’ll have a ‘holistic’ college decision process), especially as ‘ruach’ (spirit) is important and also because the stats for say, the Honors colleges, or engineering, or whatever, may be somewhat different.

And I definitely hear you about visiting - that’s a must when considering somewhere so far away and so different than what she’s known her entire life (we live in an area with about a 20% Jewish population, schools close for the major holidays, and none of us has been south of Virginia). It will be an interesting experience visiting whether or not she ends up attending a southern school.

Thank you everyone! - the things I didn’t know…for anyone who’s still interested, the entire spellbinding story of our current environment,my child’s high school career, our fear of the southern U.S.A., our knowledge of the southern U.S.A. (none), and more, is just below (I think).
