Find me a show

Ok. I thought I’d try something here because it doesn’t quite got in to the other categories. I’m gonna list 5 shows I’ve loved ( and what it is about it I loved ) and 5 shows I hate ( ditto re why) and see if anyone has a suggestion for a new show.
LOVE

  1. Grimm ( for the romance, humor, friendship stories….not the fair tales/horror…literally sontimes fast forwarded if not essential to arc of the plot)
  2. Buffy/Angel ( see above…with fight scenes fast forwarded)
  3. Vampire Diaries (yet again….see a pattern?)
4 Ted Lasso (friendship, kindness, humor)
  4. What we do in the Shadows ( creativity, humor)
I’ve also seen and liked White Collar, Burn Notice, Aaron, Legends of Tomorrow, I zombie, Sherlock, Murdoch Mysteries)

HATED

  1. Veep ( mean spirited)
  2. The Affair ( ugh, why is everyone such a misery)
  3. This is Us (loathed these people…sorry)
4)The Chair( mean spirited, unhappy people)
  4. The Sopranos (nothing for me to find interesting…too dark)

Ok, so, I’m a picky viewer. Any suggestions based on these lists?

Schitts Creek (give it some time, they will grow on you, it’s designed that way), and The Good Place.

Those two made me feel better about the world.

Hated Lupin. Not sure why. Something about the tone was “ off” for me. Russian Doll. Too unhappy. Not fun enough. True Blood. Too dark but maybe I didn’t give it enough of a chance. Sigh. I’m very picky. Tone is VERY important and it’s hard to describe what works and what doesn’t. Appreciate every single suggestion though!

Ok. So why Witcher? I watched the Trailer and it seems to have all the elements of the “ this isn’t why I watched these fantasy shows” and none of the why’s. No humor. No overriding very strong romance. Am I wrong ?

I thought it had a fair amount of humor, a little romance, and Henry Cavill.

The first show that comes to mind is A Discovery of Witches. It has the vampire/supernatural theme, emphasizes romance and relationships (genre is usually classified as “romance”) rather than fighting. and is done well. True Blood also fits. I assume you are aware of The Originals and Legacies, which do not fit as well as the others. None of the above emphasize humor, but some have humorous elements.

Thanks! The trailers showed none of the humor which I’m not surprised at. When I told my friends son I watched Grimm for the romance and humor he didn’t get it. He watched for the horror/ fantasy/ creatures. I think if you watched trailers they would not emphasize the humor or romance.

Good omens maybe? No romance and quirky, but it is witty and fun.

And older British show - Being Human. A ghost, warewolf and vampire all live together and try to blend in with society and be normal. If you can get it, I’d think you’d like it

Gosh, if you didn’t like Lupin or This is Us then I might not be able to help you. Just kidding.

For a fun comedy with some interesting family dynamics too, how about The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (Amazon Prime) ? The main character is a 1950s female Jewish comic in 1950s, and each show includes a funny monologue. Warning - some course language

Nothing to suggest because we are probably TV opposites. BUT I love this thread idea and will enjoy reading.

Curiosity: let us know when you’re satisfied with your responses and maybe someone else can list their 5 love/hate shows - and then people can @ the person they are responding to. (Or if you prefer people could start their own thread unless that gets out of hand….)

Based on your 1, 2, & 3, how about the first couple seasons of Sleepy Hollow? (I’m not sure if it’s available anywhere, I think it was originally on FOX or CW.) Humor, friendships, fish-out-of-water, with supernatural stuff you can ignore. I really enjoyed it at first, but eventually gave up on it.

If you liked White Collar, you would probably like Covert Affairs which was popular on USA at the same time they originally aired.

Agree with the Psych rec.

Teen Wolf is similar to some you liked but not as well done as the Whedon shows.

The original Charmed. Maybe Roswell (original).

Wonderfalls/Dead Like Me/Pushing Daisies

I assume you tried Firefly.

Farscape

Eureka

I feel like I am forgetting a lot of shows!

I was a big Buffy fan. What about What They Do in the Shadows (HULU). It’s a comedy mockumentary of vampires living in Staten Island. Think This is Spinal Tap meets vampires.

Timeless was awesome. It’s not currently on, but you can catch the “not too old” version.

Manifest is a more current one we enjoy. It was cancelled, then picked up by Netflix. We’re waiting for the final season to see how they wrap it up.

FBI has filled in in the meantime.

We also liked White Collar, Burn Notice, Sherlock and Monk - haven’t watched the others you mentioned as we don’t watch much TV. You didn’t mention Monk… if you never saw that one you should try it. We loved it.
