Hi! I’ve enrolled in BC for this coming fall 2010 but Im a little confused about how to go about finding/requesting a roommate. I filled out the residency app. a while ago with my info and filled out the short app that asked you questions about your habits. I noticed that they matched you to a bunch of people that answered similarly to you on the application. what am i supposed to do from here? do i have to talk to these people myself and get them to consent on being roommates or does the college randomly assign you a roommate based on your answers?
I got a little scared because I haven’t been on agora in a while and then i just logged on to my account today and i noticed that the list of potential roommates all have something that says "room assigned) next to their name which wasn’t there before. This was on every single one. Does this mean that they all already have roommates?
If anyone knows about BC’s roommate matching process and can enlighten me, that would be really appreciated! thanks

Yes, so Agora basically lists every person that filled out that survey and shows you how similar your responses were. From there, you can message people and find out more information/ask them to be your roommate! If it sounds awkward, it is. If you don’t choose a roommate, BC will assign you one (and they say that it’s based on your responses to this survey, so ideally more similar people will be placed together). The “room assigned” issue happened last year as well; no, it does not mean that everyone already has a roommate/assigned room.

If I can make a suggestion, it is to go random. First of all, on those surveys and Facebook, people always say things about themselves that aren’t true, so you never really know what kind of roommate you’ll be getting. Secondly, if you choose a roommate, there’s more pressure to get along with him/her and be friends. Good roommates do not have to be similar to you or be your friend, and if you got assigned randomly then you won’t feel as pressured to have to get along with the person. To be honest, most of the people I know that chose their roommates ended up not getting along with them at all. I would not worry about trying to find a roommate this summer. If it happens, then great, but I personally think it is best to go in random!

Good luck!

I completely echo everything NRG21B said. Going into the housing process randomly is not only less stressful but puts a lot less pressure on you once you actually get to school. I went in randomly and got placed with someone who now has ended up becoming my best friend. It was rocky first semester because he was very quiet, but we got very close this past spring. For the most part, I feel BC does a good job putting people together. Out of everyone I met this year, very few had any complaints about their roommates and almost everyone I talked to went into the process randomly.

Also, keep in mind, BC will try their best to honor your choice of roommate if you do request someone but it is not guaranteed. There were a few people I know who were among the many that ended up not getting their chosen roommate for whatever reason (most were the fact that they were chosen to either end up in a forced triple or in Williams, which I’m pretty sure was just a one-time thing for the class of 2013).
