My daughter is a social activist who is trying to decide between CWRU and Skidmore - two very different schools. I think she’s leaning toward Case after visiting and learning more about the Social Justice Institute and the Women’s Studies Program, but she’s worried that she won’t find a community of friends like she has in Atlanta - kids who are into local bands, hanging out and discussing arts, culture, and politics at the local coffee shop, maybe have some tattoos and piercings, but are not troublemakers or partiers. On her visit she really only saw what I would describe as the engineering kids. Does anyone have recent experience they can share about whether there are kids like that at or near Case?
I would imagine she could make friends through the SJI and Women’s Studies programs…through classes that she is taking in those areas
So much culture near by and places to see local bands

other thoughts @Coloradomama ?
My daughter whose very non-filtered personality, didn’t go very well at her preppy high school, has friends at Case (that is saying a lot). She says Case is its own “weird” - very accepting. She says even if you think you’re the only person into a special “thing” - chances are you are not alone. There is a “period” club at Case. However small you think that niche is - they worked together with the other clubs at Case to put on the “sexpo” - which my daughter was a committee member to bake uterus cookies.
I’m not as familiar with some parts of Case - but from what I can tell they do share classes? or there is significant overlap with the Cleveland Institute of Art. My daughter’s first SAGES professor and her freshman advisor is the conductor for the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra - so no shortage on music exposure. Plus culturally, University Circle has so many options.
Even if you have a regular, run of the mill son/daughter who is into age appropriate interests - they too, have a place at Case. This is for the mother who was afraid her social butterfly wouldn’t fit in at “socially awkward” Case.
To put it into my daughter’s words - Case is a very “woke” place. The guy that walks barefoot to class (even in the winter) has a crew.
Good luck!
Thanks so much - that is helpful. I graduated from Case in 1990 and it’s changed a lot, but because I haven’t been in the scene I have nothing to go on when I tell her that there are kids like her there and that they’ll find each other.
Would your daughter be willing to connect with my daughter?
@jimshawn I pm’d you.
My son had similar concerns, but finally committed and put in his deposit tonight. On both visits he expressed concerns about whether or not he’d fit in with the large percentage of engineering students and kids that focus entirely on academics. He is majoring in Political Science. He too is into conversations about politics, music, history, society and culture. He isn’t a big partier but he does like to have fun and is concerned everyone there studies all the time. I think with a little effort everyone can find their peeps at Case. There are lots of clubs and a Greek system that is more service oriented. He has some super smart STEM friends at high school that share his interests and I’m sure there are some at Case as well.
@JimShawn @Showantelope I know just the Case Club, there is a Global Ethical Leaders club, thats exactly that kind of discussion and student! Look at Facebook and search CWRU GELS. You will see photos of the club. They have speakers and go to conferences, and there is the Inamori Center at Case, which is just an outstanding group of people that care about ethics and politics.
The GELS club sends students to conferences, sponsors student projects abroad, and more.
Also, there is plenty of social life at Case. There are athletes at Case, also, so that crowd for sure has plenty of parties.
PM for more details. My son graduated in 2017, but still at Case a lot, even this weekend, for parties in fact.
He lives six hours away and drives in for social events.
Cleveland has stuff going on, for students. Plenty to do.
Also take Case Classes in philosophy. Arts and Sciences at Case is by FAR the best classes, outside
nursing, and accounting, although engineering has some strengths.
. Music is outstanding at Case,
and lots of students double major and take lessons at CIM. Musicians are very strong at Case,
and not that nerdy although they practice a lot.
See this philosophy teacher who is an art curator.

Also accounting is big at Case, so its not all engineers. Nurses are more relaxed than some engineers as well.
Physics is particularly strong at Case. Psychology and English are bigger majors at Case than most
College Confidential bloggers seem to realize. Romance languages are strong at Case. Economics is
good, no PhD program in economics at Case, so professors work on summer research with undergrads.
