I heard that national scholarships are hard to get and that I should specnd my time and energy applying for local scholarships. What is the best way to go about finding these local scholarships?

I'd so go to your high school's guidance counselor.

You can also ask your folks what organizations they belong to & whether they give any scholarships. Also ask where your famly banks--many banks also give scholarships. Look to employers--of you or any family members for scholarships as well. Sometimes, you can look at info from other HSs in your area about local scholarships as well.
Be sure to double-check the requirements for scholarships--many require a showing of financial need to qualify & some have very specific requirements. Sometimes the local public library also has info about available scholarships, as does your local newspaper.
