Finding My Dream Transfer School!

Hi to all,

I'm currently in the process of withdrawing from Tulane in New Orleans, and taking next semester off to see where I can go to school. I'm currently a freshman and I, for many reasons, do not like Tulane. I had a REALLY rough first two months, and yes things have def. gotten better, but not good enough for me to stay.

I have thought of a few schools, but I won't mention them yet lol.
I am wondering...does ANYBODY know schools that meet the following criteria?

** Under 40,000/yr
** Has a reputable music program (maybe including jazz/contemporary music)
** Gay friendly
** Liberal
** Has a journalism program
** Is more than 5,000 students

Thanks!

UNC? Not sure about the music program, but the J school is well respected.

Why everybody wants out of Tulane?

Tulane is sooo not a good school!! In every way, shape, and form. Academically, it should toooootally not be even in the top 100 as i know so many people that got in with below a 3.0 GPA which...says a lot about selectivity lol.

Florida State University
University of Cincinnati

fsu has a great music program! i find that the campus is more liberal than what i am used to from my hometown but it's still the south - i'd say it is half and half between parties. but the journalism program i believe is a joint program with FAMU (florida agricultural and mechanical university) and that you take the classes there.

You might look at California State University-Chico. One of California's best undergrad journ-programs, a bit of a party school but basically liberal and LGBT-friendly. I'd be going there if I hadn't set my heart on going out-of-state.

Another option would be San Francisco State University. Super-liberal, the LGBT capital of the world and another one of California's top journalism schools.

I'm not sure about Chico but I'm pretty sure SFSU has a highly-regarded music department.

You ought to take a serious look at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Good medium sized, friendly student body. They have both great music and Journalism programs. I know many kids from all walks of life that are very happy there academically and socially. Give it a look! Good luck, sorry you are so unhappy. Things will get better.

Florida State University
University of Cincinnati
Indiana University Bloomington
Ithaca College
Arizona State University/ Uof Arizona

Take a look at these.

I hate to say it but University of Miami has a great music school and is really gay friendly. The only thing is it's very similar to Tulane with big emphasis on partying and not as much on academics but the music students aren't as bad as the rest of the students. Their journalism program is supposed to be good as well. It's a little over 40,000 but if you got good grades at Tulane, you'll probably get some money to make it work.

But Indiana is also an amazing music school and much less expensive.

Good luck, I am currently taking the semester off and it's rough figuring out where to go.

sungashick- what does your name come from/stand for?

Thanks all! Just out of curiosity, anybody else have some suggestions?

it's my name, it's Flemish (Belgium)

that's so cool! i wish i had more international friends, but there are not many at my college... actually, i don't think i even know any here...

Jeremy, definitely apply to these schools

Florida State University
University of Cincinnati
Indiana University Bloomington

if you want:

** Under 40,000/yr
** Has a reputable music program (maybe including jazz/contemporary music)
** Has a journalism program
** Is more than 5,000 students

edit: i read a long time ago that you were applying to Umiami, did you get in?

Hahaha yes I got into their frost school of music a LONNNNNNG time ago lol. I decided not to attend b/c i got no $$ there and it seemed a little materialistic...then again, judging by the looks of tulane, it looks less materialistic than here (funny how that worked out eh?) lol

Miami and Tulane are very similar. Most people who went to Miami didn't get into Tulane. But I started college in 05 during Katrina so after that, the ones who wanted to go to Tulane stayed there.

Indiana is probably one of your best bets. I'm from the Chicago land area and I know that Indiana has one of the top music programs in the country. And it's not incredibly expensive.

Now this is way over 40,000 but if you have amazing grades, NW is a good school. They just got a new jazz studies director who is supposed to be amazing. Their journalism program is one of the top in the country.

And to get into NW music school, it depends on your audition not your grades but your grades could help you get more money. NW I think is fairly good with giving out money. But again really expensive. Just something to think about though.

NW? Is that Northwestern? lol. most people say nu i wasn't sure haha, i auditioned there (if it is northwestern) and got rejected :-\ meh.

yeah Northwestern. Sorry, should have made that more clear. If you got good grades at Tulane, might be worth a shot.
